Simultaneous Measurement of Bending and Torsion in Optical Fiber Shape Sensor

Guolu Yin et al.

Summary: Optical fiber shape sensing technology is a great solution for tracking and guiding minimally invasive surgical instruments. However, in tasks involving large-deformed instruments, the curved structure of the instrument produces significant torsion, which poses a threat to the accuracy of shape reconstruction.

Seven-core fiber embedded ultra-long period grating for curvature, torsion or temperature sensing

Xinyu Wang et al.

Summary: We have proposed and demonstrated a novel seven-core fiber (SCF) embedded ultra-long period grating (EU-LPFG) structure for curvature, torsion or temperature sensing. The EU-LPFG is fabricated by periodically splicing a SCF and a single mode fiber (SMF) using a fusion splicer and a microscope. It has high sensitivity and ability to measure curvature, torsion, and temperature in a compact structure, making it suitable for harsh environment applications.

Direction-Discriminating torsion sensor based on optical fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer

Guolu Yin et al.

Summary: In this research, an intensity-modulated and direction-recognizing torsion sensor based on a sandwich structure of two mode fiber is proposed. By utilizing the antisymmetric phase of the fiber mode, the sensor operates like Marius' law. The torsion direction can be distinguished by the asymmetric transmission spectrum, where peaks and troughs interchange. The sensor achieves a torsion sensitivity of 364%/(rad/cm) with a measurement accuracy of ±0.22 rad/m.

Highly discriminative simultaneous measurement of level, refractive index and temperature of liquid by dual-wavelength fiber ring-cavity laser sensor

Jinwen Zhang et al.

Summary: A novel dual-wavelength fiber laser sensor is proposed and completed using a parallel configuration of modified fiber Bragg grating and modal interferometer. The sensor achieves high-discriminative simultaneous measurements of temperature, refractive index, and liquid level, with sensitivities of 19.88 pm/℃, 159.32 dB/RIU, and 568 pm/mm, respectively, and errors below 2.52%. Dynamic field tests verify detection limits of 0.15 mm, 0.42℃, and 9 x 10-4 RIU.

In-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer for simultaneous measurement of temperature and directional torsion

Fan Zhang et al.

Summary: An in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) has been proposed and demonstrated for simultaneous measurement of temperature and directional torsion. By monitoring the wavelength shift and intensity variation of a resonant dip, both temperature and torsion can be measured simultaneously. The sensor also has the capability of twist direction discrimination, with greatly reduced spectrum range required for measurement, making it more convenient for practical application.
