Numerical analysis of the hydrodynamic interaction between a propeller and trapezoidal rudder

Weipeng Zhang et al.

Summary: The wake evolution of the propeller-rudder system affects the noise performance of the vessel. The interaction between the propeller and trapezoidal rudder is investigated, including the analysis of asymmetric pressure distribution on the rudder and the evolution of rudder tip vortex and propeller vortices in the downstream. The results suggest that the trapezoidal rudder induces completely asymmetric distributions of turbulence in the propeller wake, and the rudder geometry can be optimized to adjust the turbulence in the wake.

Research on propeller bearing force of a four-screw ship in oblique flow

Shuai Sun et al.

Summary: The present study conducted numerical simulations to investigate the influence of oblique flow on the bearing force performance of a four-screw ship. The findings suggest that the outside propeller wake field is more significantly impacted by a positive drift angle, whereas the effect is reversed for negative drift angles. Both the inside and outside propellers exhibited an increase in propeller axial average loads with an increase in drift angle. Propeller loads with drift angles were observed to be larger than those under straight ahead conditions, with the amplitudes of the inside propeller at negative angles being greater than those at positive angles, likely due to the intense bilge vortex. Notably, the outside propeller demonstrated maximum amplitudes of axial loads at a beta = 10 degrees condition, while the minimum was observed at a beta = - 10 degrees condition.

Vibro-acoustic responses of a hull due to structural and acoustic excitations from a propeller

Chenyang Li et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the vibro-acoustic responses of a submerged hull under propeller force. It proposes a technique using the finite element method and the coupling method to model a complex vessel comprising a three-dimensional propeller, shaft, and hull. The results show that the structural excitation from the propeller is the primary way to excite the hull, and the phase difference between the sound radiation from the hull due to structural excitation and that due to acoustic excitation determines the change in sound radiation from the hull.

BEM-FEM coupling for the hydroelastic analysis of propeller-shafting systems in non-uniform flows

Jiasheng Li et al.

Summary: Understanding the hydroelastic behavior of the fluid-propeller-shafting system is crucial for reducing vibration and noise in underwater vehicles. A method combining a three-dimensional panel method with a three-dimensional finite element method for analyzing the hydroelastic dynamics of fully coupled propeller and shafting systems in non-uniform flows has been developed. The study finds that designers need to consider the elastic coupling effect between the shaft and propeller, especially with high-skew propellers. Additionally, the uncoupled model underestimates fluid-induced damping.

Influence of skew angle on the random vibration response of propeller-shafting system induced by turbulent inflow

X. D. Tong et al.

Summary: The influence of skew angle on the random vibration response of propellers induced by turbulent inflow was investigated. Results showed that increasing skew angle slightly increased broadband force and decreased propeller rigidity, potentially increasing structural noise.

Assessment of RANS and DES turbulence models for the underwater vehicle wake flow field and propeller excitation force

Yichen Jiang et al.

Summary: Numerical simulations were conducted to evaluate the performance of different turbulence models in predicting the wake flow field and propeller excitation force of underwater vehicles. Results showed that the RANS model successfully captured main flow field features and predicted mean propeller loads, while the DES model simulated wake flow field with more details and predicted larger fluctuations in propeller loads. Fluctuations in blade hydrodynamic loads were highly correlated with wake turbulence intensity, and the phase-averaged evolution course of propeller force predicted by the DES model was almost identical to that predicted directly by the RANS model.

Effects of the duct on the vibro-acoustic characteristics of the pump-jet-shaft-submarine system under pump-jet excitation

Zhiwei Su et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of distributed pressure on the duct induced by rotor and its effects on the vibro-acoustic response of the coupled pump-jet - shaft - submarine system. The pulsating pressure on the duct and rotor is computed using computational fluid dynamics, and then mapped to the structural mesh to calculate the vibro-acoustic responses of the system. The study finds that the distributed pressure on the duct near the rotor disk is tonal at blade passing frequency and contributes significantly to the underwater sound radiation.

Influence of an upstream hydrofoil on the acoustic signature of a propeller

A. Posa et al.

Summary: The acoustic characteristics generated by a system consisting of a hydrofoil and a downstream propeller are investigated using the acoustic analogy method. The results show that the angle of incidence of the hydrofoil has a significant impact on the acoustic signature of the system. The nonlinear component of sound dominates at small radial coordinates near the wake, while the linear component of sound originates from the surface of the propeller and moves away along the radial direction. The shear between the wakes shed by the hydrofoil and the propeller plays an important role in enhancing the nonlinear sources of sound.

Summary: The study focuses on the low-frequency broadband noise radiated by highly skewed propeller due to inflow turbulence. By calculating the thrust spectrum, pressure spectrum, and analyzing the radiated noise power of force sources and velocity sources, the relationship between modal characteristics and radiated noise, as well as the influence of inflow conditions on noise level, are discussed for potential reduction of propeller vibration and noise.

Numerical simulation of the cavitating noise of contra-rotating propellers based on detached eddy simulation and the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings acoustics equation

Jian Hu et al.

Summary: Contra-rotating propellers (CRPs) are widely used in underwater vessels for their stability, efficiency, and torque distribution, but high rotational speeds lead to cavitation and high levels of cavitation noise. The noise sound-pressure levels generally decrease with increasing frequency, but when cavitation is present, the noise levels become significantly higher.
