A study on damage characteristics of double-layer cylindrical shells subjected to underwater contact explosion

Guangliang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the damage characteristics of double-layer cylindrical shells with interlayer water subjected to small charge underwater contact explosion were investigated. The distribution characteristics of the field pressure near the shells and the bubble dynamics were revealed. The experimental results showed the existence of crevasse and non-crevasse areas in the outer shell, which resulted in inrushing bubbles and induced bubbles in the interlayer water, respectively. The subsequent collapse of these bubbles impacted the inner shell.

Study of underwater explosion near rigid cylinder column with numerical method

Lingquan Li et al.

Summary: In this paper, a finite volume method with a five-equation model is implemented for multi-fluid simulations. The numerical model considers air, water, and high-explosive materials as compressible fluids. The equations of state for the fluids are written in a general formulation. The method is validated through one-dimensional detonation, TNT ignition in water, explosion near a rigid cylinder, and underwater explosions near a rigid cylinder in a partially filled tank.

Numerical research on the cavitation effect induced by underwater multi-point explosion near free surface

Jun Yu et al.

Summary: The cavitation effect induced by two charges in underwater explosions near free surfaces is numerically investigated using a four-equation system with a phase transition model. The generation, development, and collapse of cavitation can be directly captured. The density, pressure, and vapor volume fraction contours provide detailed information about cavitation, free surfaces, and explosion bubbles. The expansion of the cavitation domain beyond the location of the explosion bubble in two-charge underwater explosions is of significant importance for the load on underwater structures. The results also shed light on the mechanism underlying the interaction between explosion bubbles, cavitation, and surface wave dynamics, expanding the currently limited database on multiphase fluid behavior in underwater explosions.

Evaluating the shape and orientation effect of non-spherical charge on the pressure distribution of underwater explosion: Finite element analysis

Yandong Qu et al.

Summary: Limited studies have been conducted to investigate the shape and orientation effect on the pressure distribution and peak pressure of non-spherical charges in near-field underwater explosions (UNDEX). A detailed 3-D finite element model based on arbitrary Lagrange-Euler (ALE) algorithm was used to study the near-field pressure distribution of UNDEX within an infinite water field. The results showed that the shape and orientation effect have a significant impact on the pressure distribution, and a reference formula for the peak pressure of non-spherical charges was obtained.

Experimental and Numerical Studies on Fixed Steel Sheets Subjected to Underwater Explosion

Si Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic responses of a fixed steel sheet subjected to underwater explosion tests with different TNT charge weights. The deformation process of the steel sheet includes hogging, sagging, and hogging again, influenced by shock waves, bubble expansion, collapse, and pulsation. Parametric analysis shows that steel strength, plate thickness, and detonation distance can reduce the damage to the steel plate, while the impact of charge shape and position is limited. The largest deformation occurs when the detonation distance reaches the bubble radius.
