A unified theory for bubble dynamics

A-Man Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, we proposed a novel theory for the dynamics of oscillating bubbles. This theory takes into consideration various factors such as boundaries, bubble interaction, ambient flow field, gravity, bubble migration, fluid properties, and surface tension. We validated the theory with experimental data and compared it with classical theoretical models, demonstrating its advantages. Additionally, we applied the theory to model complex multi-cycle bubble interaction and gained new insights into inter-bubble energy transfer and pressure wave coupling.

Experimental and Numerical Studies on Fixed Steel Sheets Subjected to Underwater Explosion

Si Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic responses of a fixed steel sheet subjected to underwater explosion tests with different TNT charge weights. The deformation process of the steel sheet includes hogging, sagging, and hogging again, influenced by shock waves, bubble expansion, collapse, and pulsation. Parametric analysis shows that steel strength, plate thickness, and detonation distance can reduce the damage to the steel plate, while the impact of charge shape and position is limited. The largest deformation occurs when the detonation distance reaches the bubble radius.

Numerical study of effects of stand-off distance and gravity on large scale bubbles near a breach

Ming He et al.

Summary: In this study, a numerical model based on the Eulerian finite element method is used to investigate the coupling between large-scale bubbles and breaches in ship structures under the influence of underwater explosions. The standoff distance is found to determine the pattern of water influx, while gravity affects the volume and velocity of the incoming water. Initially, gravity has little influence on the ingress process, but as bubbles rise and displace water, the effect of gravity becomes more pronounced, causing a sudden increase in water influx volume.

Underwater explosive bubble interaction with an adjacent submerged structure

Carlos Javier et al.

Summary: An experimental and computational investigation was conducted to study the interaction between bubbles generated by an underwater explosive and a nearby steel plate structure. The results show that the UNDEX standoff distance greatly influences the gas bubble's shape, migration speed, bubble jetting behavior, and loading into its adjacent structure. Additionally, the impulse generated by the collapse of the UNDEX gas bubble is larger than that generated by the shock wave impact on the plate surface.

Interaction of two out-of-phase underwater explosion bubbles

Nian-Nian Liu et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates the dynamic properties of underwater explosion (UNDEX) bubble pairs, revealing that UNDEX bubble pairs are more significantly influenced by buoyancy effects and the interaction between bubbles is more complex. The results show that adjusting the delay between two detonations can alter the damage potential of the bubble pair significantly, impacting the morphology and pressure of the bubbles.

Study of three-dimensional air gun bubble pulsation and the surrounding fluid pressure with finite volume method

S. Zhang et al.

Summary: This study established a compressible, three-dimensional air-gun bubble model in OpenFOAM using finite volume and volume of fluid methods to investigate the characteristics of air-gun bubble pulsation and surrounding flow-field pressures produced by various opening areas and forms. The study quantitatively analyzed the maximum horizontal bubble displacement, main primary pulse, and bubble pulse, revealing that different air-gun opening areas result in variations in bubble expansion and collapse times and lead to different bubble shapes during the pulsation cycle. The system with the largest airgun opening area had the largest pressure wave primary pulse.
