Hydroelastic Analysis of Hard Chine Sections Entering Water-Observations for Use in Preliminary Design Stage

Sasan Tavakoli et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of structural flexibility during the water entry process of a hard-chine section using a finite volume method-based flexible fluid-structure interaction model. Quantitative comparisons between experimental and computational data show that structural responses can alleviate the pressure acting on the body of hard-chine sections. The study also reveals the important role of impact speed and sectional Young's modulus in hydroelastic response.

A fluid-solid momentum exchange method for the prediction of hydroelastic responses of flexible water entry problems

Sasan Tavakoli et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) method for predicting hydroelastic water entry. The method utilizes momentum exchange between fluid and solid to calculate pressure, deformation, and stresses during impact. By using the finite volume method, a computational code is applied to solve flexible fluid-structure interactions, providing better momentum matching at the fluid-solid interface. The study demonstrates that the pressure on an elastic body can be predicted using a simple equation based on momentum exchange.

Review of the uncertainties associated to hull girder hydroelastic response and wave load predictions

Spyros Hirdaris et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the importance of uncertainties in hull girder loads influenced by flexible fluid structure interactions, with a focus on hydroelastic modelling, simulation, and model tests. The challenges in realizing and modelling uncertainties are discussed, including limitations of numerical methods, ambiguity of model tests, and systematic use of data from different methods. An approach to assess uncertainty in hydroelastic responses to wave loading is recommended, and an example is provided to demonstrate its application.

Potential -flow and CFD investigations of bow-flare slamming on a container ship in regular heading waves

Yuan Lin et al.

Summary: The study investigates ship motions and slamming pressures of a 10,000 TEU container ship in regular waves through numerical and experimental methods. A modified model is proposed to solve symmetric and asymmetric flare slamming calculations, considering wave-ship encounter time and asymmetric rolling motions. Computational fluid dynamics simulations, empirical formulas, and segmented model tests contribute to predicting slamming behavior and duration under various conditions. The occurrence and duration of slamming are influenced by normal impact velocity, relative positions of the ship and waves, rolling period, and encountering wave, with different behaviors observed under different wave conditions.

Slamming and green water loads on a ship sailing in regular waves predicted by a coupled CFD-FEA approach

Jialong Jiao et al.

Summary: This study integrates CFD and FEA solvers to predict ship wave loads and slamming loads, taking hydroelastic effects into account. By comparing results using different mesh sizes and time step schemes, verification and sensitivity analysis of the wave loads and slamming pressures on a flexible ship are conducted. A simplified bow flare and bottom slamming pressure estimation method is proposed, based on seakeeping data of incident wave and ship global motions.

Uncertainty analysis of hydroelastic responses and wave loads for different structural modeling and potential methods

Peng Yang et al.

Summary: Different modeling methods and potential flow methods have significant influences on the prediction results of wave loads and hydroelastic responses of ships in waves. The study evaluates the influences and uncertainties of the structure modeling method, indicating that the 1D Euler-Bernoulli beam model overestimates resonant frequencies. Numerical analysis shows smaller prediction errors for vertical bending moment and horizontal bending moment, while torsional moment has the largest error.
