Reliable design of container shipping network with foldable container facility disruption

Yoonjea Jeong et al.

Summary: Foldable containers provide operational benefits in terms of cost savings and green transportation. However, they are vulnerable to disruptive events and often experience complete failure. This study focuses on designing a reliable container network against facility failure for foldable containers and proposes a novel integer linear programming formulation. The analysis shows the trade-offs between cost savings and reliability in the supply of empty containers using a mix of standard and foldable containers.

Ship traffic optimization method for solving the approach channel and lock co-scheduling problem of the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangzi River

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: Due to the increasing demands of waterway transport on the Yangzi River, traffic congestion at Three Gorges Dam (TGD) has become a serious issue, causing long waiting times and environmental pollution. This paper presents a new mathematical model to optimize the efficiency of ship traffic scheduling at TGD. A multi-objective metaheuristic algorithm based on fuzzy correlation entropy is proposed to solve the problem. Simulation experiments based on real historical data demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The results of this study are valuable for improving ship traffic efficiency and energy savings at TGD.

Ship route planning based on intelligent mapping swarm optimization

Weihao Ma et al.

Summary: In this paper, a new strategy for simultaneously optimizing ship route and speed is proposed using a hierarchical mapping method that considers different carbon tax models. The main innovation of the proposed method is the separation of decision-making and weather information layers, which allows for the direct acquisition of ship route and speed decisions that align with maneuverability and crew habits. The key algorithmic contribution is a bi-layer mapping intelligent optimization algorithm, which establishes mapping relationships and a synchronous iterative update strategy. Case studies demonstrate significant advantages in both conventional and complex terrain ocean scenarios. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis shows that this method can help shipping companies better cope with rising fuel prices and various ship carbon tax models.

Multimodal transportation network with cargo containerization technology: Advantages and challenges

Xuehao Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigates a bulk cargo distribution problem in a multimodal transportation network considering both the transportation modes of inland waterways and containerization technology. A mixed-integer linear programming model is developed to optimize transportation mode selection, vehicle routing, depot selection, and cargo quantity for containerization. Numerical experiments based on the Yangtze River network show that containerization transportation can decrease total transportation costs. The study provides insight into the decision making of logistics companies and government policymaking.

Hub-and-spoke network design for container shipping in inland waterways

Saiqi Zhou et al.

Summary: This research proposes a hub-and-spoke network design (HSND) for container shipping in inland waterways based on the tree-like structure river, aiming to address the increasing importance of inland shipping due to the enormous growth in river transportation and the upgrade of inland waterways. The study presents the characteristics of the hub-and-spoke network in inland waterways and develops an integer linear programming model to optimize hub location, feeder port allocation, and fleet deployment. Additionally, the research introduces decomposition-based math-heuristic method and enhanced genetic algorithm to solve the proposed HSND.

Multi-objective collaborative agreements amongst shipping lines and marine terminal operators for sustainable and environmental-friendly ship schedule design

Maxim A. Dulebenets

Summary: Ocean-going ships transport a significant amount of goods globally. This study proposes a new type of collaborative agreement to help shipping lines and marine terminal operators meet emission reduction targets. By developing a mathematical model and optimization method, a balance between economic and environmental perspectives can be achieved, facilitating effective implementation of collaborative agreements.

Cascading effects of sustained low water on inland shipping

Frederik Vinke et al.

Summary: The river Rhine, a busy waterway in Europe, has been impacted by severe low discharge events in 2018, which have caused shortages in source materials and fuels. Concerns have been raised about the potential increase in frequency and severity of such events due to climate change. This paper proposes a method to incorporate the cascading effects of low discharge events into climate risk assessments for waterborne supply chain performance.

Robust liner ship routing and scheduling schemes under uncertain weather and ocean conditions

Mingyu Li et al.

Summary: With the opening of the Northern Sea Route, commercial shipping developments have become a reality, and new liner services along this route have been proposed. However, uncertainties in weather and ocean conditions in this region may result in delays, leading to significant financial losses. These uncertainties inevitably affect cargo shippers' willingness to choose this route, despite its shorter shipping time compared to traditional Asia-Europe lines.

A comprehensive ship weather routing system using CMEMS products and A* algorithm

Manel Grifoll et al.

Summary: This paper describes the implementation of a comprehensive software called SIMROUTE for ship weather routing. The A* pathfinding algorithm is used to optimize the sailing route based on wave action. The software aims to provide a comprehensive, open, and easy-to-use tool for ship weather routing simulations, including pre- and post-processing. It is constructed considering the use of CMEMS wave prediction systems and provides optimized routes, minimum distance routes, and additional modules for ship emission and navigation safety monitoring. SIMROUTE has been tested in different cases and can be easily modified to include additional ship wave resistance models and consider the effects of water currents and winds on navigation. It is also used for academic purposes to train ship routing optimization skills. Due to its simplicity, SIMROUTE is a good candidate for benchmarking and comparing with advanced methods for ship weather routing.

Optimization of empty container allocation for inland freight stations considering stochastic demand

Kang Chen et al.

Summary: This paper presents a model for empty container allocation without knowing the probability distribution function of demand in advance. It adopts the largest-debt-first policy and a differential evolutionary algorithm to solve the model. Experimental results show that the proposed policy is better in controlling operational and management costs in case of high demand fluctuations.

An integrated optimization method for tactical-level planning in liner shipping with heterogeneous ship fleet and environmental considerations

Junayed Pasha et al.

Summary: Maritime transportation flows and container demand have been increasing, and one common strategy adopted by shipping lines is deploying large ships. However, there has been limited research on heterogeneous fleets in tactical liner shipping decisions. This study proposes an integrated optimization model to address all major tactical liner shipping decisions, including the deployment of a heterogeneous ship fleet and considering emissions generated throughout operations.

Deploying, scheduling, and sequencing heterogeneous vessels in a liner container shipping route

Summary: Previous studies assume identical container ships in liner container shipping operations, but this study considers the heterogeneous vessels on a shipping route. A mixed integer programming model is developed to select optimal ships and minimize total cost, with numerical experiments showing significant improvement over classical algorithms. Applying the model to a real-case shipping route demonstrates a 5% reduction in total cost compared to homogeneous vessels, with managerial insights provided.
