Green space dynamics in response to rapid urbanization: Patterns, transformations and topographic influence in Chattogram city, Bangladesh

Sumaiya Siddique et al.

Summary: Due to rapid urbanization, green spaces have become an essential part of urban development. This study investigated the changing pattern of green spaces resulting from unplanned urbanization in Chattogram city, Bangladesh, and how topographic gradients of elevation and slope influence this change. The results showed a decrease in green spaces over the past few decades, primarily due to the expansion of built-up areas. However, the decreasing trend of forest cover was relatively low in areas with specific topographic conditions, such as high mountains.

Assessment of Land Cover Dynamics, Land Surface Temperature, and Heat Island Growth in Northwestern Bangladesh Using Satellite Imagery

Tanzida Akter et al.

Summary: The study in northwestern Bangladesh revealed a decrease in water bodies, forests, and bare land over the past 28 years, while agricultural land and settlement areas have expanded. The heat island has been spreading, with a rise in land surface temperature, higher temperatures seen in urbanized areas.

Spatio-temporal dynamic land cover changes and their impacts on the urban thermal environment in the Chittagong metropolitan area, Bangladesh

Md. Yousuf Gazi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the changes in LULC and LST in the rapidly expanding urban area of Bangladesh, finding that urban structures and bare lands have the highest LST, while vegetation and water bodies have the lowest. The research shows an increase in urban structures, a decrease in vegetation and bare lands, and a slight increase in water bodies. The increase in high-temperature LU types and decrease in low-temperature LU types led to a 6.5-degree Celsius increase in mean annual temperature.
