Ingestion of fishing items by South American sea lion in southern Brazil: Indicating a neglected problem

Rodrigo Machado

Summary: The conflicting interactions between South American sea lions and fishing activities cause economic losses and damage to fishing gear. This study analyzes the fishing items found in the stomachs of stranded sea lions in southern Brazil to demonstrate the gear damage during the depredation of catch. The results suggest that this type of interaction deserves more attention and further research.

Local disconnects in global discourses-The unintended consequences of marine mammal protection on small-scale fishers

Katrina J. Davis et al.

Summary: Global commitments prioritize wildlife protection and human well-being, but local disconnects are often overlooked, hindering effective solutions. Efforts to protect marine mammals along South America's west coast have led to conflicts between sea lions and small-scale fisheries. Solutions to manage these conflicts should consider the heterogeneity among fisher groups.
