Local perceptions of mangrove protection and livelihood improvement in Co-management: Lessons learnt and recommendations

Nguyen Tan Phong et al.

Summary: Co-management is widely used for forest resource management in developing countries. However, there is limited knowledge about local perceptions of outcomes in protecting mangrove forests under co-management programs. This study in Kien Giang, Vietnam used shoreline change analysis and interviews to examine the underlying causes of poor protection and ineffective use of allocated mangrove forests. The findings emphasize the importance of documenting local perceptions to improve co-management of natural resources.

Estimating mangrove forest gross primary production by quantifying environmental stressors in the coastal area

Yuhan Zheng et al.

Summary: This study developed a remote sensing-based productivity model to estimate the light use efficiency and gross primary production of mangrove forests in China. The results showed that the model has high accuracy and can help in the study of the carbon cycle of mangrove ecosystems.

High-resolution mapping of losses and gains of Earth's tidal wetlands

Nicholas J. Murray et al.

Summary: Based on satellite data analysis, it was found that losses and gains of tidal wetlands were offsetting each other globally. Over the past two decades, there have been losses of 13,700 square kilometers and gains of 9700 square kilometers, resulting in a net change of -4000 square kilometers. 27% of these losses and gains were associated with direct human activities, while other changes were attributed to indirect drivers.

Blue carbon sequestration following mangrove restoration: evidence from a carbon neutral case in China

Sourav Bagchi Ratul et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of plantation management on carbon sequestration in a carbon-neutral site in Xiamen, China. The results showed that the carbon sequestration rate of Kandelia obovata plantation was significantly higher than others when planted in the indirect shade of pioneer species. The carbon accumulation rate of Sonneratia plantation in China is comparable to those in Bangladesh. However, there was a difference in soil carbon accumulation rate between Sonneratia plantations in China and Bangladesh.

Latitudinal gradients and climatic controls on reproduction and dispersal of the non-native mangrove Sonneratia apetala in China

Pubin Hong et al.

Summary: The study conducted in situ observations of fruit and seed properties of Sonneratia apetala across a latitudinal gradient from Haikou to Quangang in southern China. It found that fruit quantity decreased with increasing latitude, while fruit weight and volume varied quadratically relative to latitude. Seed quantity, weight, and volume were not correlated with latitude. Climatic factors such as precipitation, low temperature, and irradiance had significant effects on fruit properties.

How Land-Sea Interaction of Tidal and Sea Breeze Activity Affect Mangrove Net Ecosystem Exchange?

Xudong Zhu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that coastal mangrove wetlands act as consistent carbon sinks with weak seasonality in net ecosystem exchange (NEE), and environmental controls vary across time scales. Periodic tidal inundation and sea breeze activity exert both direct and indirect effects on mangrove NEE, with sea breeze relieving atmospheric temperature/moisture stresses and promoting carbon uptake. Previously neglected indirect effects of land-sea interaction play an important role in influencing mangrove carbon flux.
