Assessment of Community-Level Vulnerability and Access to Medications for Opioid Use Disorder

Summary: This study found that communities with greater vulnerability did not have better geographic access to medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD), and the mismatch between vulnerability and medication access was greatest in suburban communities. Rural communities had poor geographic access regardless of vulnerability status.

Summary: Despite evidence showing that using evidence-based medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) can lower mortality risk, only 20% of individuals with OUD receive MOUD. Black patients are less likely than White patients to initiate MOUD. Various factors such as criminal justice and human services were measured in relation to MOUD initiation disparities by race, with mediators explaining around one-fifth of the variation in initiation related to race.

Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome Is Associated With Infant Foster Care Entry At The County Level

Summary: The number of infants diagnosed with neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) and entering foster care has increased in the US since 2009, but analyses exploring their relationship are lacking. Research found that every one diagnosis of NOWS per ten births was associated with a 41 percent higher rate of infant foster care entry, while rural county residence was associated with a 19 percent higher rate. Additionally, a higher employment rate was associated with lower rates of infant foster care entry.

Addressing Racial And Ethnic Disparities In The Use Of Medications For Opioid Use Disorder

Summary: Despite the higher rate of opioid-related deaths among people of color compared to non-Hispanic White people, there is a disproportionately low initiation and retention of medication treatment for OUD among people of color. Methadone, a stigmatized and burdensome treatment option, is the predominant medication used for OUD in this population. To address these disparities, policymakers should consider strategies such as Medicaid expansion, increased funding, retention of telehealth policies, and regulatory changes.
