Development of the Sepsis-Associated Adverse Outcomes in Pregnancy Score

The associations of subjective appraisal of birth pain and provider-patient communication with postpartum-onset PTSD

Summary: The subjective appraisal of childbirth pain by women and positive communication with medical providers during labor are better predictors of postpartum-onset PTSD than objective pain measures. Positive perception of birth pain and good provider communication were associated with reduced risk of probable PTSD at different time points postpartum. These findings suggest the importance of addressing women's subjective experiences and improving patient-provider communication to reduce rates of postpartum PTSD.

Comparison of early warning scores for predicting clinical deterioration and infection in obstetric patients

Summary: This study compared the performance of general early warning scores and obstetric early warning scores for predicting deterioration and infection in obstetric wards. The results showed that the electronic Cardiac Arrest Risk Triage (eCART) score had the highest accuracy for predicting deterioration, while maternal early warning scores were more accurate than general scores. These findings have important implications for risk stratification of maternal ward patients.

Association of the Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate With vs Without a Coefficient for Race With Time to Eligibility for Kidney Transplant

Summary: In a cohort study of 1658 self-identified Black adults with chronic kidney disease, commonly used estimates of kidney function did not correspond well with directly measured kidney function. Estimating kidney function not including a coefficient for race (vs including a race coefficient) was significantly associated with a shorter time to achieving an estimated glomerular filtration rate less than 20 mL/min/1.73 m(2), a key threshold of kidney function for referral and listing for kidney transplant. The findings suggest that biases in race-based glomerular filtration rate estimates may be associated with delays in potential kidney transplant eligibility.
