Does Delayed Fertility Explain the Rise in Comorbidities Among the Birthing Population?

Carrie Wolfson et al.

Summary: This study examined live birth data in California from 1991 to 2012 and found that while there was an increase in chronic conditions among pregnant women of advanced maternal age, it was not solely attributed to the increase in maternal age.

Mortality Rates Among US Women of Reproductive Age, 1999-2019

Alison Gemmill et al.

Summary: High and increasing mortality rates among reproductive-aged women in the U.S. have significant implications for maternal, women's, and children's health. Patterns differ by age, race/ethnicity, and geography, indicating a need to address structural factors to improve health outcomes for this population.

Severe Maternal Morbidity: A Comparison of Definitions and Data Sources

Jonathan M. Snowden et al.

Summary: Severe maternal morbidity (SMM) is a serious issue that requires attention in research and clinical practice. In the United States, there are various commonly used definitions of SMM, but there is low concordance between them, especially regarding transfusion, claims data, and birth certificate definitions. Further research on the validity of SMM definitions using more detailed data sources is needed.

Impact of the ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM transition on the incidence of severe maternal morbidity among delivery hospitalizations in the United States

Amy Metcalfe et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of transition from the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, to the Tenth Revision coding systems on severe maternal morbidity incidence in US hospital discharge data. The results showed a significant decrease in severe maternal morbidity incidence following the transition, indicating a sudden and clinically meaningful change associated with the coding shift.

Birth outcomes across the spectrum of maternal age: dissecting aging effect versus confounding by social and medical determinants

Bolanle Olapeju et al.

Summary: The study showed that the increase in adverse pregnancy outcomes among Black women in the US with increasing maternal age is due to both an independent aging effect and confounding by sociodemographic, biomedical, and behavioral factors. Adjusted analysis revealed higher odds of cesarean section deliveries and low birth weight among women aged 30 years or older. Maintaining optimal BMI status and consistent intake of multivitamin supplements can help reduce the risk of spontaneous preterm birth and low birth weight.

Adverse Birth Outcomes Among Women of Advanced Maternal Age With and Without Health Conditions in Maryland

Blair O. Berger et al.

Summary: This study found that even healthy older pregnant women are at higher risk of adverse birth outcomes. In addition, compared to younger women with similar health conditions, older women have higher odds of PTB and LBW. Improved screening and management of health conditions during pregnancy is necessary for older women.
