Factors associated with weight regain post-bariatric surgery: a systematic review

Dimitrios I. Athanasiadis et al.

Summary: This systematic review identified that at least 1 in 6 patients after bariatric surgery had weight regain of >= 10%. Factors related to weight regain were categorized into anatomical, genetic, dietary, psychiatric, and temporal factors. Understanding these factors can help counsel patients before surgery and guide postoperative strategies to minimize weight regain risk.

Neural Vulnerability Factors That Predict Future Weight Gain

Eric Stice et al.

Summary: This article discusses five neural vulnerability theories related to weight gain and reviews evidence from prospective studies and randomized experiments. Recent studies using imaging and behavioral measures have advanced knowledge of etiologic processes and neural plasticity resulting from weight change. Overall, strong support is provided for the incentive sensitization theory of obesity, while moderate support is seen for other theories, with little support for the reward deficit theory. Important directions for future studies have been delineated.

Predictors of weight loss in participants with obesity following bariatric surgery-A prospective longitudinal fMRI study

Patrick Bach et al.

Summary: The prevalence rates of overweight and obesity are increasing worldwide and are leading causes of death. Bariatric surgery is more effective than other weight optimization approaches for individuals with obesity. Research indicates that cue-induced food craving is an important predictor for successful weight loss following surgery.
