Randomized controlled trial for time-restricted eating in healthy volunteers without obesity

Zhibo Xie et al.

Summary: Time-restricted feeding, both early (eTRF) and mid-day (mTRF), have been shown to have metabolic benefits. A randomized controlled trial comparing the effects of eTRF and mTRF in healthy non-obese individuals found that eTRF was more effective in improving insulin sensitivity and other metabolic parameters.

Mannose: A Sweet Option in the Treatment of Cancer and Inflammation

Fang Nan et al.

Summary: Mannose, a natural sugar abundant in fruits, has been found to promote immune tolerance, suppress inflammatory diseases, and inhibit tumor growth. This makes it a potential novel therapeutic strategy for treating cancers and inflammatory diseases.

Efficacy of metformin therapy in patients with cancer: a meta-analysis of 22 randomised controlled trials

Jie Wen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of metformin treatment on the prognosis of different types of cancer. The results suggest that metformin treatment is not associated with cancer-related mortality, but may have beneficial effects on patients with reproductive system cancers and worsen the prognosis for patients with digestive system cancers.

The basis and design for time-restricted eating compared with daily calorie restriction for weight loss and colorectal cancer risk reduction trial (TRE-CRC trial)

Kelsey Gabel et al.

Summary: This study aims to examine the effectiveness of time-restricted eating and daily calorie restriction in treating obesity and reducing the risk of colorectal cancer. The 12-month randomized controlled trial will investigate the effects on body weight, metabolism, inflammation, and other markers, as well as the maintenance of these benefits.

Clinical review of alkalization therapy in cancer treatment

Reo Hamaguchi et al.

Summary: Activated aerobic glycolysis, known as the Warburg effect, and the resulting acidic tumor microenvironment are associated with cancer progression. Studies suggest that neutralizing the acidity by alkalizing agents or an alkaline diet could suppress cancer progression and enhance anti-cancer drug responses. However, the impact of alkaline dietary intervention on cancer treatment remains unclear, and there are limited clinical reports on combining alkalization therapy with cancer treatments.

Caloric Restriction Mimetics in Nutrition and Clinical Trials

Sebastian J. Hofer et al.

Summary: Human diet and dietary patterns play a crucial role in health status, with high-calorie Western-style diets linked to non-communicable diseases and calorie-reduced health-promoting diets showing promising results. Pharmacological Caloric Restriction Mimetics (CRMs) have attracted interest as potential candidates to mimic effects induced by caloric restriction.

Dietary intervention as a therapeutic for cancer

Mami Morita et al.

Summary: Nutrient availability in the microenvironment influences cancer metabolism, which can be manipulated by dietary modifications. Few dietary interventions have been scientifically proven effective in mitigating disease progression or enhancing cancer therapy in humans. Recent research suggests that combining specific cancer therapies with dietary interventions could critically impact therapeutic efficacy.

ZIP10 is a negative determinant for anti-tumor effect of mannose in thyroid cancer by activating phosphate mannose isomerase

Sharui Ma et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that mannose selectively kills thyroid cancer cells depending on the enzyme activity of PMI rather than its expression. It was found that the zinc ion transporter protein ZIP10 is negatively related to the cellular response to mannose. Mechanistically, mannose exerts its anti-tumor effect by inhibiting cellular glycolysis, which is highly dependent on the expression of ZIP10.

Metabolic Reprogramming by Reduced Calorie Intake or Pharmacological Caloric Restriction Mimetics for Improved Cancer Immunotherapy

Erwan Eriau et al.

Summary: Reduced food intake and caloric restriction mimetics have been shown to increase healthy lifespan, reduce cancer incidence, and enhance responses to certain cancer treatments. These effects are mediated by cellular mechanisms and vary between cancer cells and healthy cells due to differences in metabolic requirements. Additionally, both reduced food intake and caloric restriction mimetics can induce autophagy, improving the efficacy of certain cancer treatments that induce immunogenic cell death and enhance the therapeutic efficacy of chemo-immunotherapies.

Is targeting autophagy mechanism in cancer a good approach? The possible double-edge sword effect

Su Min Lim et al.

Summary: Autophagy is a cellular process essential for maintaining homeostasis, involving the degradation and recycling of cytosolic materials. In cancer, autophagy plays a dual role, suppressing malignant transformation while supporting cancer cell survival and promoting tumorigenicity. Researchers are investigating the potential of targeting autophagy for cancer therapeutics.

Mannose and phosphomannose isomerase regulate energy metabolism under glucose starvation in leukemia

Yusuke Saito et al.

Summary: Various driver oncogenes induce diverse metabolic changes during leukemia onset and progression. Mannose serves as an alternative energy source for leukemia cells, and high expression of phosphomannose isomerase (PMI) promotes its conversion to glycolysis. Conversely, suppression of PMI or excessive mannose loading inhibits leukemia cell growth by affecting mitochondrial metabolism and the TCA cycle.

Tissue-Specific Warburg Effect in Breast Cancer and Cancer-Associated Adipose Tissue-Relationship between AMPK and Glycolysis

Andjelika Kalezic et al.

Summary: Specific metabolic phenotypes of breast cancer and cancer-associated adipose tissue differ between normal-weight and overweight/obese women, with increased AMPK protein expression and distinct glucose metabolism patterns. The context-dependent induction of tissue-specific Warburg effect in breast cancer and adipose tissue highlights the complexity of metabolic reprogramming in the tumor microenvironment. Obesity-related differences in glucose metabolism further contribute to the understanding of the metabolic alterations in breast cancer.
