Poor conceptual knowledge in the food domain and food rejection dispositions in 3-to 7-year-old children

Abigail Pickard et al.

Summary: Previous research has shown that children with poorer taxonomic knowledge in the food domain tend to reject food more. This series of studies investigated the development of conceptual knowledge in the food domain and its link with food rejection. The results demonstrate that children as young as 3 years old are already attending to thematic and script structures to inform food-based decision making, and increased food rejection tendencies are negatively related to script and thematic understanding.

Spicing up food interactions: Development of a healthy food education activity targeting fathers and their young children

Andreia Ferreira Moura et al.

Summary: The study aims to propose and qualitatively evaluate an intervention to increase fathers' involvement with their families' healthy eating through exposure to new/disliked healthy foods. The results show that participating in the activities motivated children and fathers to try new vegetables and spices, and increased fathers' sense of self-efficacy toward cooking, tasting new foods and healthy feeding. The outcomes observed are of importance considering the relatively low cost and the remote approach of the intervention.

Warning labels as a policy tool to encourage healthier eating habits

Gaston Ares et al.

Summary: Front-of-package (FOP) nutrition labeling policies based on warning labels are becoming popular in the Americas. These warning labels aim to highlight products with excessive nutrients linked to noncommunicable diseases. Evidence suggests that FOP nutrition labeling improves consumer understanding of nutritional information and discourages unhealthy product choices. Further research is needed to explore the impact of warning label policies on food choices, long-term population health, and product reformulation.

Obesity in children and adolescents: epidemiology, causes, assessment, and management

Hiba Jebeile et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the current knowledge on child and adolescent obesity, including its epidemiology, causes, assessment considerations, and management approaches. Prevalence of obesity had plateaued in high-income countries but increased in low-income and middle-income countries before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, weight gain among children and adolescents has increased during the pandemic. Obesity is associated with various health issues and premature mortality. The development and persistence of obesity can be explained by a bio-socioecological framework. The first-line treatment approaches involve family-based behavioral interventions addressing diet, physical activity, sedentary behaviors, and sleep quality. Additional therapies such as intensive dietary approaches, pharmacotherapy, and metabolic and bariatric surgery are emerging, but access to them is limited. Personalized treatment approaches and their translation to clinical practice still require further research.
