Is it time to throw out the weighing scales? Implicit weight bias among healthcare professionals working in bariatric surgery services and their attitude towards non-weight focused approaches

Summary: This study aimed to explore implicit bias among obesity specialist healthcare professionals (HCPs) and their views on non-weight focused approaches. The findings showed that half of the 82 obesity specialist HCPs in the study had an implicit weight bias against people living with overweight or obesity (PLwO). HCPs felt that a weight-focused approach hindered patient care but alternatives were lacking.

The results suggest that older patients and those of lower socioeconomic status may have a greater risk of unfavorable outcomes and may require greater attention to micronutrient and protein supplementation post-surgery.

Summary: Non-medical prescribing is a potential healthcare reform strategy in Australia that could create efficiencies in the health system. Podiatrists, although well positioned to prescribe, face barriers to endorsement due to lack of government subsidy for scheduled medicines. Research found that most podiatrists prescribe for pain, inflammation, or infections, with few actually having endorsement to prescribe scheduled medicines. Various barriers, particularly related to training processes, exist in the current endorsement system for podiatrists.

An evaluation of a collaborative pharmacist prescribing model compared to the usual medical prescribing model in the emergency department

Summary: In Australia, dietitians often engage in informal extended scope of practice when caring for patients prescribed PERT, believing they are equipped to prescribe medication where dose is largely dependent upon diet. Most dietitians believe that prescribing PERT for dietitians would be beneficial, leading to greater efficiency, improved patient care, increased job satisfaction, and enhanced inter-professional communication. Further research is needed to establish a formal framework for extended scope of practice related to PERT and potentially other medications.
