Empathy, caring and compassion: Toward a Freudian critique of nursing work

Summary: This paper summarizes key psychoanalytic concepts developed by Sigmund Freud and applies them to examine empathy, caring, and compassion in nursing. The author argues that the nurse's strong identification as a caregiver can be seen as a fantasy of being cared for. Critics suggest that empathy may actually be a form of projective identification. The repeated research on caring and complaints about barriers to caring can be understood as manifestations of the death drive. Psychoanalytic insights highlight the ambivalence and self-destructive symptoms inherent in caring roles.
