Biodiversity impacts and conservation implications of urban land expansion projected to 2050

Rohan D. Simkin et al.

Summary: Urban land expansion is a significant driver of habitat and biodiversity loss, particularly in developing tropical regions. Strategies should be implemented to minimize the impacts of urban land and strengthen global biodiversity protection.

Exceeding 1.5°C global warming could trigger multiple climate tipping points

David I. Armstrong Mckay et al.

Summary: This study provides a revised shortlist of global core tipping elements and regional impact tipping elements and their temperature thresholds through synthesizing paleoclimate, observational, and model-based research. The current global warming is already approaching the lower end of some tipping point uncertainty ranges, and several tipping points may be triggered within the range of global warming set by the Paris Agreement. Therefore, urgent action is needed to mitigate climate change and develop improved tipping point risk assessment, early warning capability, and adaptation strategies.

Catchment to sea connection: Impacts of terrestrial run-off on benthic ecosystems in American Samoa

Mia T. Comeros-Raynal et al.

Summary: The research found clear gradients in nutrient concentrations, sediment accumulation, composition, and benthic structure across watersheds in American Samoa. Instream nutrients and land use positively influenced reef flat nutrient concentrations, while benthic assemblages were best predicted by wave exposure, runoff, stream phosphate, and dissolved inorganic nitrogen loads. Identifying locality-specific drivers of water quality and benthic condition can support targeted management in American Samoa and other high islands.

The role of Indigenous peoples and local communities in effective and equitable conservation

Neil M. Dawson et al.

Summary: The involvement of Indigenous peoples and local communities plays a crucial role in achieving positive outcomes in conservation efforts. Externally controlled conservation tends to be ineffective, while locally controlled efforts are more successful. Emphasizing governance type and quality, as well as reinforcing the role, capacity, and rights of Indigenous peoples and local communities, can lead to more effective conservation outcomes.
