Biomarkers of neuroprogression and late staging in bipolar disorder: A systematic review

Sonya Grewal et al.

Summary: This systematic review examines the biological markers associated with illness progression in bipolar disorder. It finds that increased ventricular size and reduction of grey matter volume are common brain changes associated with the progression of the disorder. In addition, peripheral inflammatory markers also play a role in this process.

Quantitative detection of methylated SOCS-1 in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder considering SOCS-1-1478CA/del polymorphism and clinical parameters

Hasan Mervan Aytac et al.

Summary: This study investigated the methylation levels of the SOCS-1 gene in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BD), and found that these levels were significantly lower in patients compared to the control group. The study also found a correlation between the SOCS-1 gene polymorphism and clinical manifestations in BD patients.

Genetic polymorphism of IL-17F rs763780 contributes to the susceptibility to bipolar disorder but not to schizophrenia in the Turkish population

Yasemin Oyaci et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic polymorphism in the interleukin-17F (IL-17F) gene in patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia (SCZ). The results showed significant differences in IL-17F genotype and allele frequencies between BD patients and the control group, while no significant differences were found in SCZ patients.

Depressive-like behavior accompanies neuroinflammation in an animal model of bipolar disorder symptoms induced by ouabain

Samira S. Valvassori et al.

Summary: The study suggests that long-term Na+K+ATPase inhibition induces depressive-like behavior in rats, accompanied by increased inflammation. Lithium treatment partially reverses these detrimental behaviors.

Association of intron 4 VNTR polymorphism in the NOS3 gene with rapid cycling and treatment resistance in bipolar disorder: a case-control study

Hasan M. Aytac et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the relationship between clinical parameters of bipolar disorder patients and the intron 4 VNTR variant of the endothelial nitric oxide synthase (NOS3) gene. The results suggest that the NOS3 intron 4 VNTR variant may be associated with rapid cycling and treatment resistance in bipolar disorder patients.

The Influence of Interleukin-2 Gene Polymorphisms on the Risk and Clinical Outcome of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

Somaia Mohammed Mousa et al.

Summary: Polymorphisms in the IL-2 gene, specifically rs2069762 and rs2069763, are associated with an increased risk of developing NHL and a higher chance of unfavorable prognosis. The simultaneous presence of both polymorphisms significantly raises the risk of developing NHL. This suggests that IL-2 gene polymorphisms may play a role in the development of NHL.

Inflammation in Bipolar Disorder (BD): Identification of new therapeutic targets

Ana Catarina Pereira et al.

Summary: Bipolar disorder is a chronic and cyclic mental disorder characterized by unusual mood swings and has deleterious impact on society and economy. Inflammation plays a key role in the pathophysiology of BD, with evidence showing altered levels of cytokines, activated microglial cells, and the involvement of inflammation in BD pointing towards inflammation as a novel and attractive therapeutic target for BD.

The functional polymorphisms linked with interleukin-1β gene expression are associated with bipolar disorder

Xingfu Pu et al.

Summary: Functional single nucleotide polymorphisms in the promoter region of IL-1 beta gene were significantly associated with risk of bipolar disorder (BD), and haplotype analyses further supported the involvement of IL-1 beta promoter SNPs in BD. The risk SNPs previously reported to predict higher IL-1 beta levels in the brain and peripheral blood of BD patients compared with healthy subjects.

Investigation of inflammation related gene polymorphism of the mannose-binding lectin 2 in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder

Hasan M. Aytac et al.

Summary: The study revealed an association between MBL2 gene polymorphism and clinical features in patients with SCZ or BD, with higher percentages of heterozygous genotypes in the control group compared to patients. Additionally, a favorable treatment response was linked to a higher proportion of heterozygous genotypes in patients with SCZ or BD.
