BART-D2 subtype of EBV encoded BART miRNA cluster 1 region is strongly associated with endemic nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Qiaoyi Wang et al.

Summary: The study reveals the important role of EBV-encoded BART microRNAs in viral infection and tumorigenesis. Analysis of viral genomes from nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) populations in endemic and non-endemic regions shows the presence of a distinct subtype, BART-D2, that is associated with NPC risk in NPC-endemic China.

DIANA-microT 2023: including predicted targets of virally encoded miRNAs

Spyros Tastsoglou et al.

Summary: DIANA-microT-CDS is an advanced miRNA target prediction algorithm that has been serving the scientific community since 2009. It is one of the first algorithms to predict miRNA binding sites in both the 3' Untranslated Region (3'-UTR) and the coding sequence (CDS) of transcripts, with improved performance. The current version, DIANA-microT 2023, provides updated interactions based on annotation information from Ensembl v102, miRBase 22.1, and MirGeneDB 2.1, resulting in over 83 million interactions in multiple species, as well as interactions between viral miRNAs and host transcripts. The webserver of DIANA-microT offers various features including smart filtering options, identification of abundance patterns, detection of known SNPs on binding sites, and access to miRNA-disease information.

Identification of a SARS-CoV-2 virus-derived vmiRNA in COVID-19 patients holding potential as a diagnostic biomarker

Qian Zhao et al.

Summary: To minimize the spread of SARS-CoV-2, it is necessary to develop reliable approaches for early diagnosis and suppression of viral replication. This study predicted and identified 15 precursors and 20 mature CvmiRNAs encoded by SARS-CoV-2, with CvmiR-2 showing high specificity and conservation in covid-19 patients. The expression level of CvmiR-2 was correlated with patient severity, and it may be involved in immune response, muscle pain, and neurological disorders. CvmiR-2 has the potential as a diagnostic biomarker or therapeutic target in clinic.

Virus-Derived Small RNAs and microRNAs in Health and Disease

Vasileios Gouzouasis et al.

Summary: miRNA can regulate gene expression at all steps and virus-derived miRNA plays a role in immune evasion and chronic infection. The interactions between sRNAs and the host have implications in chronic stress, inflammation, immunopathology, and disease. The latest research focuses on using in silico approaches to study v-miRNAs and other RNA types in order to identify therapeutic targets against viral infections.

The Impact of Sex and Gender on Stroke

Kathryn M. Rexrode et al.

Summary: Women bear a disproportionate burden of stroke mortality and disability. Both biological sex and sociocultural gender contribute to differences in stroke risk factors, assessment, treatment, and outcomes. This review outlines the current knowledge of the impact of sex and gender on stroke, while also identifying research gaps and areas for future inquiry.

dbDEMC 3.0: Functional Exploration of Differentially Expressed miRNAs in Cancers of Human and Model Organisms

Feng Xu et al.

Summary: MicroRNAs play important roles in gene expression regulation, and their dysregulation is widely reported in pathological cellular states. The dbDEMC database was constructed to store and query differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) in human cancers. The updated version, dbDEMC 3.0, contains more data entries and includes data from mice and rats. It provides a valuable resource for studying the molecular functions and regulatory mechanisms of DEMs in human cancers.

Decoding microRNA drivers in atherosclerosis

Tanwi Vartak et al.

Summary: Approximately 97% of the human genome is made up of non-protein-coding sequences. Among these, micro-RNAs (miRNAs) are a class of short non-coding RNAs that play important roles in genome regulation. Understanding the role of ncRNAs, particularly miRNAs, in the development of atherosclerosis can lead to new therapeutic approaches.
