Summary: The Ne-18(alpha, p) Na-21 reaction is crucial in Type-I X-ray bursts as it facilitates the synthesis of heavier elements in the alpha p- and rp-processes from the hot-CNO cycles. An experiment was conducted to determine the cross section of this reaction, which was found to be consistent with the time-inverse reaction but lower than direct measurements. The experiment establishes new data on the excitation function of the Ne-18(alpha, p) Na-21 reaction, highlighting the importance of excited states and providing insights into the (alpha, 2p) reaction. The impact of the measured cross section on thermal reaction rates is also discussed.
