Design and construction of a 9 MeV γ-ray source based on capture of moderated plutonium-beryllium neutrons in nickel

P. -. A. Soderstrom et al.

Summary: We have developed and built a high-energy gamma-ray source for the purpose of detector characterisation and calibration. The source consists of a composite structure, with a plutonium-beryllium neutron emitter embedded in a paraffin moderator that is mixed with nickel powder. This 9 MeV gamma-ray source emits approximately 450 photons per second in 4 pi, when 2.2 x 10(5) neutrons per second are emitted, resulting in a surface flux of 9 MeV gamma-rays of about 2.5 x 10(-6) cm(-2) per emitted neutron. In this paper, we discuss the properties and design of this source, including the characterization of homogeneity and the high-energy gamma-ray emission spectra.

Photonuclear reactions-From basic research to applications

A. Zilges et al.

Summary: Photon-induced nuclear reactions are crucial for basic research and applications in physics, providing a valuable probe due to their selectivity and model-independence. Photons in the MeV energy range are ideal for addressing societal challenges with their penetrability. Advancements in advanced photon sources and detection methods have paved the way for new scientific discoveries and technological applications in photonuclear reactions in the last two decades.

ELIGANT-GN - ELI Gamma Above Neutron Threshold: The Gamma-Neutron setup

P. -A. Soderstrom et al.

Summary: This article presents the recently implemented ELI Gamma Above Neutron Threshold setup at the Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics. It introduces the main goals, mechanical design, and performance of the detector array, as well as GEANT4 simulations for realistic beam conditions. The performance of the array as a whole is demonstrated by reproducing the angular correlations of neutrons following spontaneous fission of a Cf-252 source.

Liquid nitrogen cooling, control and monitoring system for the ELIADE HPGe clover detectors at ELI-NP

A. Dhal et al.

Summary: A liquid nitrogen cooling station for high-purity germanium segmented clover detectors, designed and built in-house at ELI-NP in Romania, is presented. The LN2 filling process is controlled by a CompactRIO system and LabVIEW software. The temperatures of germanium crystals and Pt100 sensors are monitored during the filling process. An automated twelve-hour cycle is used to fill all detectors. A GUI, CLI, and TUI are used for control and monitoring, with alert emails sent in case of cooling malfunction. Temperature data is stored in an Influx database and visualized in real-time using Grafana.

Nuclear level densities and ?-ray strength functions in 120,124Sn isotopes: Impact of Porter-Thomas fluctuations

M. Markova et al.

Summary: In this study, nuclear level densities (NLDs) and gamma-ray strength functions (GSFs) of 120,124Sn were extracted using the Oslo method. The functional forms of the GSFs and NLDs were further constrained using the Shape method. The experimental results show good agreement with previous measurements for other isotopes.

First in-beam experiment with the ELIADE detectors: a spectroscopic study of 130La

L. Capponi et al.

Summary: ELI-NP is a combined laser-gamma nuclear physics research facility currently in its final implementation stages in Magurele, Romania, with two fully-operational 10 PW laser arms and plans to house a gamma-beam system by 2023. With its unique laser-gamma instrumentation combination, a variety of experiments, including high precision nuclear resonance fluorescence studies, will be possible at ELI-NP.

Microscopic Structure of the Low-Energy Electric Dipole Response of 120Sn

M. Weinert et al.

Summary: The microscopic structure of the low-energy electric dipole response in Sn-120, known as pygmy dipole resonance (PDR), was studied in an experiment by comparing experimental data with a novel theoretical approach. The results demonstrate the importance of understanding the one-particle-one-hole structures of the 1(-) states in the PDR region for reliably predicting PDR properties and its contribution to nucleosynthesis processes.

Comprehensive Test of the Brink-Axel Hypothesis in the Energy Region of the Pygmy Dipole Resonance

M. Markova et al.

Summary: Three independent experimental methods were used to address the validity of the Brink-Axel hypothesis for 116,120,124Sn below the neutron separation energy. The gamma-ray strength functions extracted from different methods demonstrated excellent agreement, indicating the applicability of the hypothesis in the energy region of the pygmy dipole resonance in heavy nuclei.

Independent normalization for γ-ray strength functions: The shape method

M. Wiedeking et al.

Summary: The shape method is a novel approach to obtain the functional form of the gamma-ray strength function, and to simultaneously determine the slope of the nuclear level density. Utilizing primary gamma-ray transitions, the shape method has been successfully applied to representative cases demonstrating the retention of the functional form of the gamma SF.
