A facile strategy to fabricate high-barrier, water- and oil-repellent paper with carboxymethyl cellulose/collagen fiber/modified polyvinyl alcohol

Ruifeng Zhu et al.

Summary: Due to the environmental and health hazards caused by traditional food packaging materials, paper-based packaging materials have become increasingly popular. This study focused on the fabrication of fluorine-free degradable water- and oil-repellent paper using low-cost bio-based polymers. The coatings made of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), collagen fiber (CF), and modified polyvinyl alcohol (MPVA) provided excellent water and oil repellency to the paper. The resulting paper showed excellent water repellency, oil repellency, low air permeability, and strong mechanical properties, making it suitable for food packaging applications.

Fibrous packaging paper made of oil palm fiber with beeswax-chitosan solution to improve water resistance

Juntima Chungsiriporn et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of beeswax-chitosan solution as a coating on packaging paper made from fibrous residual wastes, such as oil palm fiber. The results show that the coated paper has improved water resistance properties compared to non-coated paper. Different concentrations of NaOH and doses of pulp were used to produce the paper samples, and their physical and mechanical properties were tested. The coated paper had higher grammage and smoothness than non-coated paper, but showed some bulk reduction. The coated paper also exhibited higher tensile strength and water absorbency time. The results suggest that oil palm fiber coated with beeswax-chitosan solution has potential for fibrous paper production with long water absorbency time, contributing to the fight against deforestation.

Influence of polysiloxane microspheres on hydrophobicity, structure and mechanical properties of paper materials

Piotr Pospiech et al.

Summary: The study aims to investigate the impact of three types of polysiloxane microspheres on paper's barrier properties, structure, and mechanical properties. Findings show that hydrophilic microspheres improved liquid penetration uniformity, while small hydrophobic microspheres significantly enhanced paper's hydrophobicity without affecting mechanical properties.
