Asymptotic formulation of the nonlinear bifurcation scenarios in thermomechanically coupled plates

Valeria Settimi et al.

Summary: The analytical study focuses on the nonlinear dynamics of composite plates with thermomechanical coupling, aiming to describe the main bifurcation phenomena in the pre- and post-buckling response scenario. The asymptotic multiple scale method is employed to investigate the static buckling occurrence, two resonance conditions, and the double-zero bifurcation marking dynamical buckling. The adequacy and effectiveness of the refined scalings adopted in the multiple scale analyses are verified by comparing the resulting modulation equations and steady-state responses with numerical outcomes.

A review on nonlinear energy sinks: designs, analysis and applications of impact and rotary types

Adnan S. Saeed et al.

Summary: Dynamical and structural systems are susceptible to sudden excitations and loadings, and vibration absorbers play a crucial role in suppressing destructive vibrations. Linear vibration absorbers, such as tuned-mass-dampers (TMDs), are widely used in various structures due to their robust performance in suppressing low frequency vibrations. However, they are only effective in a narrow frequency range. On the other hand, nonlinear energy sinks (NESs) achieve wideband vibration suppression through a targeted-energy-transfer mechanism.

Experimental study of magnetic bistable nonlinear energy sink for structural seismic control

Yangyang Chen et al.

Summary: This paper presents the first experimental investigation of a magnetic bistable nonlinear energy sink (MBNES) device and its control performance. The proposed MBNES model, which includes spatial magnetic force and sliding friction, was validated and calibrated through cyclic-load tests. Shake-table tests of a shear-frame structure equipped with the MBNES device demonstrated significant suppression of seismic responses. The experimental study confirms the potential of MBNES as an efficient absorber for seismic mitigation of structures.

How a ball free to orbit in a circular track mitigates the galloping of a square prism

Michael M. Selwanis et al.

Summary: Transverse galloping is a type of flow-induced vibration that requires critical design considerations for engineering structures. A model is introduced in this study to simulate the dynamics of a square prism coupled with a ball-in-track NES and predict system behavior at high flow speeds. The study also analyzes the damping variation of the BIT-NES, the response modes of the NES at different flow speeds, and provides an analytical estimation of the boundary between oscillatory and intermittent regimes.

Finite contact duration modeling of a Vibro-Impact Nonlinear Energy Sink to protect a civil engineering frame structure against seismic events

S. Lo Feudo et al.

Summary: This paper reassesses the effects of instantaneous contact mechanics versus finite contact duration modeling in Vibro-Impact Nonlinear Energy Sinks (VI NES). The study reveals that finite duration contact models are less sensitive to Initial Conditions (IC) and provide more accurate results compared to instantaneous contact models.

Wind tunnel demonstration of galloping mitigation with a purely nonlinear energy sink

Michael M. Selwanis et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a purely nonlinear energy sink (NES) to mitigate the galloping of a square prism. The experimental assessment compares the prism amplitude responses with and without the NES, and analyzes the behavior of the ball in oscillatory, intermittent, and rotational regimes and its impact on the prism response. The design of the NES allows for easy variation of track dimensions to use balls of different sizes and masses, demonstrating the influence of main NES parameters on both prism response and ball behavior.

Summary: This paper investigates the use of multi-degree of freedom nonlinear energy sinks (MDOF-NES) for passive control of vortex-induced vibrations in a sprung cylinder. Numerical studies show that appropriate design of MDOF-NES parameters can control vibration amplitudes, with the MDOF-NES approach based on lower linear stiffness coupling proving to be more effective.
