Comparison between droplet digital PCR and reverse transcription-quantitative PCR methods to measure ecotoxicology biomarkers

Camille G. Baettig et al.

Summary: Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) is the current gold-standard technique for detecting and quantifying messenger RNA. Droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) allows for more sensitive and accurate measurements of targeted nucleic acids without external standards. This study compared these two PCR-based methods and concluded that ddPCR is suitable for assessing gene expression in an ecotoxicological context, while RT-qPCR is more time-efficient and cost-effective.

Characterization of the effects of triclosan on sperm and embryos of Mytilus and Perna mussel species

Anne Rolton et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of triclosan (TCS) on the early life stages of the Greenshell mussel (GSM) and the blue mussel (BM). The results showed that TCS increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in sperm, reduced fertilization success and larval size, and increased larval mortality. Fertilization success in GSM was only affected at the highest TCS concentration, but the development of larvae derived from exposed sperm was affected even at the lowest concentrations, highlighting the importance of assessing the sensitivity of contaminants at different developmental stages.
