Integrated flux and pool size analysis in plant central metabolism reveals unique roles of glycine and serine during photorespiration

Xinyu Fu et al.

Summary: Photorespiration is an essential process in plant carbon and nitrogen metabolism that recycles inhibitory intermediates and provides carbon and nitrogen for metabolism. This study used isotopically non-stationary metabolic flux analysis to measure amino acid export rates and found that about 23-41% of photorespiratory carbon is exported as serine. The accumulation and relaxation of glycine pools were also found to constrain photosynthetic acclimation during photorespiratory transients.

Characterization of effects of genetic variants via genome-scale metabolic modelling

Hao Tong et al.

Summary: This review discusses the integration of genetic variants in genome-scale metabolic models using constraint-based approaches, along with their effects on reaction fluxes and complex traits in plants. The study provides an analysis of the effects of genetic variants and outlines a roadmap for future research to enhance the predictive power of statistical methods.

Plasticity of rosette size in response to nitrogen availability is controlled by an RCC1-family protein

Gustavo Turqueto Duarte et al.

Summary: This study dissected the genetic architecture of plasticity in response to different nitrogen levels in Arabidopsis thaliana accessions. It was found that plasticity in levels of primary metabolites were related to the plasticities of the studied traits, and the gene At1g19880 was identified to confer plasticity of rosette diameter in response to nitrogen. Additionally, different genetic programs were shown to regulate growth and flowering-related traits in response to environmental cues.

Climate impacts on global agriculture emerge earlier in new generation of climate and crop models

Jonas Jagermeyr et al.

Summary: This study conducted systematic global agricultural yield projections using the latest generation of crop and climate models. The results indicate that substantial shifts in global crop productivity due to climate change will occur within the next 20 years, highlighting the need for targeted food system adaptation and risk management in the coming decades.

Phenotypic Plasticity Contributes to Maize Adaptation and Heterosis

Nannan Liu et al.

Summary: The study found rich phenotypic plasticity variation among maize F-1 hybrids, involving hundreds of quantitative trait loci, most of which contributed little variance. Heterosis in terms of phenotypic plasticity was also observed, which is crucial for understanding the genetic structure and breeding of maize.
