Spontaneous activity in whisker-innervating region of neonatal mouse trigeminal ganglion

Piu Banerjee et al.

Summary: It has been found that neurons in the whisker-innervating region of the trigeminal ganglion (TG) in neonatal mice generate spontaneous activity. Some neurons showed correlated activity, which mostly occurred between neurons in close proximity. This spontaneous activity was primarily observed in medium-to-large diameter neurons, characteristic of mechanosensory neurons, and could be blocked by chelation of extracellular calcium. Furthermore, this activity diminished in the adult stage.

Dual midbrain and forebrain origins of thalamic inhibitory interneurons

Polona Jager et al.

Summary: The study reveals a larger than expected complexity and distribution of inhibitory interneurons across the mouse thalamus, tracing back to two developmental programmes, with interneurons migrating to different thalamocortical nuclei depending on their origin. The data also suggest that a blueprint of the ontogenetic organization of thalamic interneurons in larger-brained mammals exists and can be studied in mice.

Spontaneous activity in developing thalamic and cortical sensory networks

Francisco J. Martini et al.

Summary: Spontaneous activity in developing sensory circuits plays a crucial role in the construction and refinement of functional networks. Originating from various sensory structures, such as the thalamus and cortex, this activity is fundamental for sensory map formation and circuit plasticity. Current data suggest similarities between the developmental trajectory of brain activity in experimental models and humans, offering potential for early diagnosis of developmental disorders.

A transient postnatal quiescent period precedes emergence of mature cortical dynamics

Soledad Dominguez et al.

Summary: Studies show that mature cortical processes emerge rapidly and simultaneously after a discrete but volatile transition period at the beginning of the second postnatal week in rodents, characterized by relative neural quiescence. This transient quiescent period is believed to be a requisite for the subsequent emergence of coordinated cortical networks. Similar developmental trajectory is observed in humans, suggesting an evolutionarily conserved mechanism that could facilitate a transition in network operation.
