Theta-Alpha Variability on Admission EEG Is Associated With Outcome in Pediatric Cerebral Malaria

Alexander Andrews et al.

Summary: The newly developed quantitative EEG variable, theta-alpha variability (TAV), is found to be independently associated with outcome in pediatric cerebral malaria, and can predict death and neurologic sequelae with high sensitivity and specificity. This automated method holds promise for improving the clinical utility of EEG in resource-limited settings.

Using EEG in Resource-Limited Areas: Comparing Qualitative and Quantitative Interpretation Methods in Cerebral Malaria

Alexander Andrews et al.

Summary: This study compared the association and predictive ability of qualitative and quantitative EEG factors with outcomes in pediatric cerebral malaria patients. Results showed that quantitative methods had better goodness of fit in modeling mortality, while qualitative methods performed better in modeling neurological morbidity in survivors. The findings suggest the potential use of quantitative EEG factors for developing automated interpretation methods in resource-limited settings.

Plasma Amino Acid Concentrations in Children With Severe Malaria Are Associated With Mortality and Worse Long-term Kidney and Cognitive Outcomes

Andrea L. Conroy et al.

Summary: Children with severe malaria have widespread changes in amino acid levels at hospital admission associated with metabolic complications at presentation. These changes in amino acids are predictive of in-hospital and postdischarge mortality, chronic kidney disease at 1-year follow-up, and worse attention over 2 years of follow-up.
