Risk of, and risk factors for, vasculopathy associated with acute herpes zoster

Barbara P. Yawn et al.

Summary: This article reviews the known risk of vasculopathy (stroke, myocardial infarction, and transient ischemic attack) after herpes zoster (HZ) and the impact of antiviral treatment and vaccination against HZ on the risk. The results show a strong association between HZ and stroke, and further studies are needed to determine the influence of antiviral treatment or HZ vaccination on the risk of HZ-associated vasculopathy.

Summary: This study characterized patients with ischemic stroke due to bacterial meningitis and found a strong association between stroke and mortality. It also discovered that ischemic stroke is caused by cerebral vasculopathy near the infection focus and has specific time courses.

The mucormycosis and stroke: The learning curve during the second COVID-19 pandemic

Dileep Ramachandran et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of stroke in patients with Angio-invasive Rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) and found that 42% of ROCM patients developed stroke, predominantly anterior circulation border zone ischemic infarcts. ROCM patients need frequent monitoring and education for early stroke detection.

Targeted RNA Sequencing of VZV-Infected Brain Vascular Adventitial Fibroblasts Indicates That Amyloid May Be Involved in VZV Vasculopathy

Andrew N. Bubak et al.

Summary: The gene expression profiles of VZV-infected HBVAFs show enriched pathways involved in vascular remodeling and vascular diseases. The infected cells secreted matrix metalloproteinase-3 and -10, and both infected and uninfected cells showed increased migration when exposed to conditioned media from VZV-infected cells. Additionally, pathways related to amyloid-associated diseases, tauopathy, and progressive neurologic disorder were identified. The presence of amyloidogenic peptides and intracellular amyloid in VZV-infected HBVAFs suggests that VZV vasculopathy may be an amyloid disease.

Increasing incidence rates of sexually transmitted infections from 2010 to 2019: an analysis of temporal trends by geographical regions and age groups from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease Study

Min Du et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the trends and differences in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) by geographical regions and age groups from 1990 to 2019. The results showed an increasing incidence of syphilis, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, and genital herpes, with variations observed among different regions and age groups.

Andrew N. Bubak et al.

Summary: This study found that VZV infection increases levels of amyloidogenic peptides and amyloid in CSF and qHPNCs, indicating a potential role in persistent arterial inflammation in VZV vasculopathy. Additionally, a novel proviral function of amylin was identified during infection.

Ceftriaxone compared with benzylpenicillin in the treatment of neurosyphilis in France: a retrospective multicentre study

Thomas Bettuzzi et al.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of ceftriaxone with benzylpenicillin in the treatment of neurosyphilis and found that ceftriaxone was similarly effective to benzylpenicillin, potentially reducing the length of hospital stay for patients. Randomised, controlled trials are needed to confirm these results.

Neurosyphilis Surveillance: Exploring the Use of Multiple Data Sources to Better Understand Morbidity in California

Nicole Olson Burghardt et al.

Summary: Accurate reporting of neurosyphilis diagnoses is important to quantify and monitor severe outcomes associated with Treponemal pallidum infection. This analysis found significant differences in the demographic distribution of neurosyphilis diagnoses between sexually transmitted disease surveillance data and administrative hospital data in California, suggesting that both systems may be imperfect in capturing the true morbidity of neurosyphilis.
