Trajectory of rich club properties in structural brain networks

Levin Riedel et al.

Summary: The organizational principles of structural brain networks undergo significant developmental changes after birth and before adulthood. This study analyzed the developmental trajectory of structural brain network in 8066 participants aged 5-80 years and found an inverted-U-shaped trajectory of connectivity strength across all brain regions, with a vertex in the early 30s. The connectivity strength of hub regions followed a similar trajectory and remained stable across all age groups, while the organization of hub regions into a rich club became more pronounced with advancing age. This indicates a selected sparing of important connections in the rich club, which might contribute to the preservation of cognitive functioning in the aging brain.

What do neuroanatomical networks reveal about the ontology of human cognitive abilities?

Daniel Kristanto et al.

Summary: Cognitive psychology and neuroscience have reached some consensus on the ontological structure of human intelligence, but it is still unclear whether the dynamical properties of the brain support the same conclusions. This study found that the ontological structure derived from neuroanatomical networks partially agrees with the psychometric ontology of intelligence, but there are also differences. The cortical areas associated with different cognitive abilities are segregated, but integrated through denser white matter connections. Understanding the consistency and differences between the psychometric and neurometric ontologies is crucial for theory building, clinical diagnostics, and treatment.

Nature and nurture shape structural connectivity in the face processing brain network

Juan Felipe Quinones Sanchez et al.

Summary: This study assessed the genetic and environmental influences on white matter bundles connecting face-responsive areas in the brain, finding that genetic and environmental factors explain individual differences in fiber quality within the face network, compared with much larger genetic effects on global brain white matter quality. Additionally, individual-specific environmental influences on the face processing brain network are large, suggesting a connection between nature and nurture views on this specific human ability.

Computational models link cellular mechanisms of neuromodulation to large-scale neural dynamics

James M. Shine et al.

Summary: This article demonstrates how biophysical models of large-scale neural dynamics can bridge the gap between neuromodulation at the cellular scale and whole-brain systems dynamics, through advancements in mathematics and related fields. While neuromodulation involves altering the biophysical properties of neurons to support adaptive cognitive functions, changes in cognitive function are not directly caused by individual neuron modulation, but are mediated by population dynamics in neural ensembles. Understanding this multiscale mapping is a challenging but crucial task.

Segregation, integration, and balance of large-scale resting brain networks configure different cognitive abilities

Rong Wang et al.

Summary: By analyzing functional brain networks in resting states, the study found that the brain networks are generally in a balanced state, allowing for both segregation and integration with flexible switching between the two. The research also showed that the balanced state of brain networks is associated with individual cognitive phenotypes, with integration linked to general cognitive ability, segregation to intelligence and processing speed, and balance tendency to memory.

Cortical neurons exhibit diverse myelination patterns that scale between mouse brain regions and regenerate after demyelination

Cody L. Call et al.

Summary: The myelination patterns in the intact mouse somatosensory cortex are influenced by axon diameter and neuronal identity. In vivo imaging showed that remyelination altered myelin patterns but restored overall myelin content on distinct neuron subtypes.
