Adult lifespan maturation and degeneration patterns in gray and white matter: A mean apparent propagator (MAP) MRI study

Mustapha Bouhrara et al.

Summary: Using the MAP-MRI framework, this study found that older adults exhibited higher non-Gaussianity and lower propagator anisotropy in white matter, indicating axonal degradation. In gray matter, these two indices were consistent and showed regional heterogeneity, suggesting fewer neuronal projections across cortical layers and increased glial concentration. Regional variations in age-related microstructural differences were also observed, consistent with the posterior-anterior shift in aging paradigm.

A novel framework for in-vivo diffusion tensor distribution MRI of the human brain

Kulam Najmudeen Magdoom et al.

Summary: Neural tissue microstructure plays a crucial role in various processes, and diffusion tensor distribution (DTD) MRI provides a new framework for investigating subvoxel heterogeneity. By employing pulsed field gradients (iPFG), the researchers developed a method to acquire multiple diffusion encoding (MDE) images and estimate DTD in the human brain. Through this technique, they were able to reveal microscopic anisotropy and capture complex white matter fiber organization, which could aid in improving neurological disease diagnosis.

High-resolution cortical MAP-MRI reveals areal borders and laminar substructures observed with histological staining

Alexandru V. Avram et al.

Summary: This study explores the sensitivity of high-resolution MAP-MRI method in detecting variations in cortical cytoarchitecture. The results show that MAP-MRI can non-invasively assess cortical cell tissue features and are in agreement with histological observations. This method has potential clinical applications for studying cortical organization, early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases, etc.

COnstrained Reference frame diffusion TEnsor Correlation Spectroscopic (CORTECS) MRI: A practical framework for high-resolution diffusion tensor distribution imaging

Alexandru V. Avram et al.

Summary: High-resolution imaging studies have shown that water diffusion in cortical tissue preferentially occurs along radial and tangential orientations. Based on this finding, a new imaging framework is proposed to visualize non-parametric diffusion tensor distributions. The framework allows efficient reconstruction of microscopic diffusion tensors and quantification of their shape and size characteristics. The framework is validated by comparing the results with histological observations, demonstrating its potential for analyzing the microstructure of brain tissue.

High-resolution mapping and digital atlas of subcortical regions in the macaque monkey based on matched MAP-MRI and histology

Kadharbatcha S. Saleem et al.

Summary: Subcortical nuclei and other deep brain structures play a crucial role in regulating the central and peripheral nervous systems. Utilizing a multi-modal approach including high-resolution MAP-MRI and histological staining, it is possible to accurately map the location, boundaries, subdivisions, and micro-architectural features of subcortical gray matter regions in non-human primate brains. This allows for a comprehensive validation of structures identified with MAP-MRI and provides anatomical details not visible in conventional T-1-weighted images. The resulting D99 digital brain atlas (V2.0) serves as a reference standard for macaque neuroanatomical, functional, and connectional imaging studies.
