Brain-spinal cord interaction in long-term motor sequence learning in human: An fMRI study

Ali Khatibi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of the spinal cord in human motor learning and found that there are changes in spinal cord activation and functional connectivity during the learning process. The subjects showed improved motor performance in the sequence task, which was associated with decreased co-contractions and increased reciprocal activations between wrist muscles. The early learning phase was characterized by activation in the C8 level, while a more rostral activation in the C6-C7 was found during the later learning phase. Increased spinal cord functional connectivity with brain networks, including the motor cortex, superior parietal lobule, and cerebellum, supported motor sequence learning at different stages.

Spinal Cord fMRI: A New Window into the Central Nervous System

Nawal Kinany et al.

Summary: The spinal cord, often overlooked in human neuroscience research, is now recognized as active and plastic. This review argues that fMRI can be utilized beyond the brain to unravel spinal mechanisms involved in human behaviors. It outlines strategies and applications of spinal cord fMRI, highlighting its potential to address fundamental and clinical questions.

Cortico-spinal imaging to study pain

Alexandra Tinnermann et al.

Summary: Functional magnetic resonance imaging has been used to investigate pain perception in both health and disease, with recent developments allowing for simultaneous recording of neural activity in the brain and spinal cord. However, challenges remain in data acquisition and analysis strategies for this promising technique.

NREM sleep stages specifically alter dynamical integration of large-scale brain networks

Anjali Tarun et al.

Summary: The study found that as sleep depth increases, the dynamic properties of functional brain networks change, with network activity predominating in NREM stage 2 and sharply decreasing in NREM stage 3. As sleep depth increases, functional connectivity and mutual dependencies between networks progressively break down.

Mood disorders disrupt the functional dynamics, not spatial organization of brain resting state networks

Camille Piguet et al.

Summary: Spontaneous fluctuations in the blood oxygenation level dependent signal have been found to aggregate into multiple functional networks in mood disorder patients. Alterations in resting brain activity appear to correlate with specific clinical symptoms, such as increased self-processing and decreased attention to the external world.
