Exploring uncertainty in regression neural networks for construction of prediction intervals

Yuandu Lai et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new deep learning method that constructs prediction intervals for regression neural networks by simultaneously performing point estimation and uncertainty quantification. The method learns uncertainty without uncertainty labels through a novel loss function and considers epistemic uncertainty in an ensemble form. Experimental results show that the performance of the method is competitive with other state-of-the-art methods.

Introduction to conformal predictors

Paolo Toccaceli

Summary: This paper provides an introduction to Conformal Predictors (CP), a machine learning method that produces predictions with a chosen error rate. CPs have the property of validity, which is supported by both asymptotic and finite-sample probabilistic guarantees. They differ from conventional prediction methods by introducing set-valued predictions. CPs do not require assumptions such as priors and are applicable in a wide range of domains. The CP framework is universal and can be applied on top of any machine learning method. The paper also discusses efficient variants of CPs and their applications in imbalanced data sets, as well as provides a survey of the field with relevant references.

Distributed Containment Control for Human-in-the-Loop MASs With Unknown Time-Varying Parameters

Guohuai Lin et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the distributed containment control problem for human-in-the-loop multiagent systems, considering unknown time-varying parameters and input saturation. A control scheme is proposed to compensate for the negative effects of these uncertainties and achieve convergence of the follower agents' output signals. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through simulation examples.

The absorption and multiplication of uncertainty in machine-learning-driven finance

Kristian Bondo Hansen et al.

Summary: This article examines the use of machine learning in financial markets and highlights the introduction of a new type of uncertainty called critical model uncertainty. While machine learning models are deployed to absorb financial uncertainty, they also bring about uncertainty in explaining their predictions and decisions. Therefore, the dialectical relationship between machine learning models' uncertainty absorption and multiplication calls for further research.

Giving commands to a self-driving car: How to deal with uncertain situations?

Thierry Deruyttere et al.

Summary: Current technology for autonomous cars focuses on getting passengers from point A to B, but passengers are afraid of riding in self-driving cars. To increase passenger confidence, researchers have developed a model that detects uncertain situations and generates clarifying questions when commands are issued, aiming to solve potential issues during interactions.
