Optimal Trade-in Return Policies: Is it Wise to be Generous?†

Kaiying Cao et al.

Summary: This study explores the optimal choice of a trade-in-return policy and finds that there is no difference to the firm between a full-trade-in-return and a partial-trade-in-return policy when no trade-in consumers keep unsatisfactory new products. It also suggests that, in the case of a relatively medium residual value of the used product, full-trade-in-return is always the better choice for the firm. Additionally, the firm may not reduce its trade-in rebate even when the average new product satisfaction rate of trade-in consumers increases.

Product diversion by vertically differentiated firms

Evelyn O. Smith et al.

Summary: This study develops an analytical model to examine the decision-making process of vertically differentiated retailers in diverting products to unauthorized dealers. The results demonstrate that low-quality sellers can earn higher profits when engaging in diversion, and a higher quality differential may result in overall profit loss for high-quality sellers. Furthermore, the study finds that sellers will only divert products if they are sufficiently similar and that low-quality sellers have a stronger incentive to divert. Additionally, changes in vertical differentiation have nonmonotonic effects on the sellers.

Summary: This paper explores the impact of piracy on companies from the perspective of entry deterrence and finds that deterring piracy is not always beneficial. It can be used as a strategy to deter potential entrants. Specifically, when the entry cost is moderate, companies may tolerate piracy and use it as a means to prevent the entry of powerful competitors.

Optimal consumer sales tax policies foronline-offlineretail operations with consumer returns

Ting Zhang et al.

Summary: The study examines the impact of sales tax on multichannel strategies and social welfare. It suggests that retailers prefer the online-and-offline channel and that offline channels may function solely as showrooms if the offline sales tax rate is high. It advises governments to consider channel type, product category, and channel-product fit when developing sales tax policies for different value products.
