Nonaffine Strains Control Ductility of Metallic Glasses

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: This study suggests that the plasticity of metallic glasses is related to the local atomic rearrangements under stress, rather than their atomic structure directly. By conducting experiments on various bulk metallic glasses, researchers found that the extent of local deviation from affine deformation within the elastic regime is strongly correlated with the plastic behavior of metallic glasses beyond yield.

Local symmetry predictors of mechanical stability in glasses

Amelia C. Y. Liu et al.

Summary: This study reveals a strong correlation between the centrosymmetry of nearest-neighbor polyhedra and the local mechanical stability in glasses. By examining the distribution of local stability and centrosymmetry, the underlying relationship between particle-level structure and larger-scale behavior is uncovered, demonstrating the significance of local structural transformations in predicting stability.

Determining the three-dimensional atomic structure of an amorphous solid

Yao Yang et al.

Summary: This study developed an atomic electron tomography reconstruction method to experimentally determine the 3D atomic positions of an amorphous solid, successfully characterizing the short- and medium-range order of the 3D atomic arrangement. The research identified four types of crystal-like medium-range order and provided direct experimental evidence to support the efficient cluster packing model for metallic glasses.

Tension-compression asymmetry in amorphous silicon

Yuecun Wang et al.

Summary: The study reveals an unusual tension-compression asymmetry in submicrometre-sized samples of isotropic amorphous silicon, with the reduction in shear modulus and densification of shear-activated configuration under compression leading to abnormal asymmetry in yield strength and anelasticity.

A medium-range structure motif linking amorphous and crystalline states

Si Lan et al.

Summary: Amorphous materials lack long-range order but exhibit ordered structures at short and medium range, with the nature of medium-range ordering often remaining elusive. A study of an intermediate crystalline cubic phase in a Pd-Ni-P amorphous alloy revealed a six-membered tricapped trigonal prism cluster (6M-TTP) as the medium-range ordered structure. The structural link between the amorphous and crystalline phases at the medium-range length scale was demonstrated, highlighting the role of 6M-TTP clusters in distinguishing crystalline and amorphous phases.
