Origin of the boson peak in amorphous solids

Yuan-Chao Hu et al.

Summary: Research reveals that the low-temperature physical properties of disordered amorphous solids differ significantly from those of ordered crystalline solids. The study identifies the microscopic origin of the excess vibrational density of states, known as the 'boson peak', as quasi-localized vibrations of string-like dynamical defects.

Disorder classification of the vibrational spectra of modern glasses

Zhiwen Pan et al.

Summary: By utilizing the coherent-potential approximation in heterogeneous-elasticity theory, researchers are able to reconstruct the vibrational density of states and characteristic descriptors of elastic heterogeneity in a variety of glassy materials. The study establishes universal relationships between these descriptors and properties of glass materials, providing new insights for the analysis of real-world glass compositions.

Summary: Helium Atom Scattering and Helium Spin-Echo scattering are surface science techniques with unique advantages that have not been widely available. Efforts are underway to establish a central helium scattering facility for measuring various material properties such as bending rigidity and phonon coupling constant of 2D materials.
