Anisotropic tension-compression asymmetry in SLM 316L stainless steel

Zhanfeng Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the anisotropic tension-compression asymmetry of SLM 316 L stainless steel was investigated through experiments and finite element simulations. It was found that the tension-compression asymmetry in the building direction is caused by directional internal stresses, while the asymmetry perpendicular to the building direction is correlated with the microstructure and internal stresses.

Local mechanical properties and precipitation inhomogeneity in large-grained Al-Mg-Si alloy

Anette B. Hagen et al.

Summary: Al-Mg-Si (6xxx series) alloys exhibit strong mechanical properties but are weakened by a soft precipitation free zone (PFZ) near grain boundaries during heat treatment, reducing material ductility. This study employs nanoindentation and microstructure characterization to quantitatively analyze these alloys. Experimental results confirm that the PFZ weakens the material, while an adjacent region exhibits increased hardness due to a higher density of precipitates. This previously unrecognized harder zone has important implications for the mechanical properties of large-grained aluminum alloys.

Experimental and numerical investigations of anisotropic plasticity response in polycrystalline copper by nanoindentation

Zhanfeng Wang et al.

Summary: The deformation behavior of crystalline materials is affected by microstructural characteristics. This study focuses on the effects of crystallographic orientation and grain boundary on the mechanical properties of polycrystalline copper using nanoindentation experiments and crystal plasticity finite element simulations. A crystal plasticity constitutive model with geometrically necessary dislocations is developed to simulate the indentation mechanical response. The results reveal significant anisotropy in the indentation behavior of polycrystalline copper, attributed to variations in the distributions of statistically stored dislocations and geometrically necessary dislocations. Additionally, the grain boundary plays a crucial role in determining the anisotropy and indentation size effect. These findings offer insights for the design of materials for plasticity applications.

On the anisotropic indentation modulus and anisotropic creep behavior of 6-Sn characterized by nanoindentation methods

B. Ernst et al.

Summary: The influence of orientation on the indentation modulus, hardness, and creep properties of high purity 6-Sn (wt.%: 99.999) was examined using nanoindentation methods. Crystal orientations close to < 100 >, < 110 >, and < 001 > were identified, and continuous stiffness measurements (CSM) and constant load creep tests were performed. The results indicated an orientation dependence in the indentation modulus, hardness, and creep properties.

Analysis of indentation size effect (ISE) in nanoindentation hardness in polycrystalline PMN-PT piezoceramics with different domain configurations

V. S. Kathavate et al.

Summary: Piezoelectric materials with varying microstructural features exhibit different levels of hardness influenced by domain configurations rather than grain size. Nanoindentation experiments on PMN-PT show varying Reverse Indentation Size Effect (RISE) and normal ISE in hardness, analyzed through the PSR model for understanding the origins of these effects. The study emphasizes the importance of domain configurations in determining the hardness properties of piezoelectric materials.

Experiment and non-local crystal plasticity finite element study of nanoindentation on Al-8Ce-10Mg alloy

Jiahao Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, nanoindentation experiments and crystal plasticity finite element model were used to investigate the single-crystal properties and sensitivity of parameters of cerium and magnesium strengthened aluminum alloys. Satisfactory matching between experiment and simulation was obtained for each individual grain. The dependence of hardness on indent depth, as well as the effect of grain orientation and neighboring grains to nanoindentation behavior, were discussed.

Investigation of novel multi-layer sandwich panels under quasi-static indentation loading using experimental and numerical analyses

Seyed Ahmad Taghizadeh et al.

Summary: This study experimentally and numerically investigated the effect of multi-layering in sandwich panel composite structures with different configurations of corrugated cores under quasi-static indentation loading. The results showed that multi-layering enhanced the structural strength and energy absorption of the composite sandwich panels. Rectangular cores demonstrated the best functionality, while damage mechanisms in the quasi-static indentation process included matrix cracking, fiber breakage, and delamination.

Indentation size effect, geometrically necessary dislocations and pile-up effects in hardness testing of irradiated nickel

M. A. Mattucci et al.

Summary: The study compared the response of Ni irradiated with protons to the non-irradiated material, based on dislocation density, through TEM analysis and nano/micro-scale indentation tests. The results showed a bi-linear trend in the Nix-Gao model for both irradiated and non-irradiated material, indicating a transition in deformation mechanisms at the nano-scale. It was suggested that the increase in hardness observed in the irradiated material during nanoindentation could be attributed to a higher density of geometrically necessary dislocations.

Orientation-dependent plastic deformation mechanisms and competition with stress-induced phase transformation in microscale NiTi

Won Seok Choi et al.

Summary: Understanding the orientation-dependent deformation behavior of NiTi shape-memory alloys at small length scales is crucial for designing nano- and micro-electromechanical systems. The study reveals that plastic deformation modes include slip and deformation twinning, with the martensitic transformation depending on crystal orientation. Results suggest that operative martensitic transformation mode may be size-dependent.

Influence of grain orientation on hardness anisotropy and dislocation behavior of AlN ceramic in nanoindentation

Peng Tang et al.

Summary: The study focused on the anisotropic properties of AlN grains using Berkovich nanoindentation, revealing a strong correlation between grain orientation, hardness, and elastic modulus. Deformation behavior was observed on specific grain orientations, with mechanisms of anisotropic pop-in events and dislocations elucidated through molecular dynamics simulation. The use of Schmid factor to determine activated slip systems proved accurate for identifying grain orientation in AlN ceramic. Plastically active regions from nanoindentation could roughly indicate crystalline orientation.

William G. Feather et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a numerical method to embed any value of the power-law exponent in a crystal plasticity finite element model, reflecting the true material strain-rate sensitivity, and successfully applies it to predict the complex strain-rate sensitive response of AZ31 Mg alloy. Calculations show that the model captures the phenomena related to the effect of changing applied strain-rate on mechanical response.
