A thermal conductivity switch via the reversible 2H-1T′ phase transition in monolayer MoTe2

Dingbo Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found through first-principles calculations that the reversible 2H-1T' phase transition in MoTe2 can cause a fourfold/tenfold change in thermal conductivity along the X/Y direction. This is due to the difference in MoTe bonding strength between the two phases. The 1T'-MoTe2 has three weaker types of bonds, while 2H-MoTe2 has one stronger bonding type, indicating bonding inhomogeneity in 1T'-MoTe2. The bonding inhomogeneity results in more scattering of vibration modes, leading to a softer structure with lower phonon group velocity, shorter phonon relaxation lifetime, and larger Gruneisen constants. The 2H to 1T' phase transition in MoTe2 hinders the propagation of phonons and reduces thermal conductivity. This study suggests the possibility of a MoTe2-based controllable and reversible thermal switch device.

Modeling and Analysis of the Capillary Force for Interactions of Different Tip/Substrate in AFM Based on the Energy Method

Amir Farokh Payam

Summary: This paper presents a simple and robust model to describe the wet adhesion between the AFM tip and substrate connected by a liquid bridge. The model takes into account various factors such as contact angles, wetting circle radius, volume of the liquid bridge, gap between the tip and substrate, environmental humidity, and tip geometry to study the capillary force. The validity of the model is verified using numerical analysis and experimental measurements, providing a foundation for further studies on the adhesion force between the AFM tip and substrate.

Relation between interfacial shear and friction force in 2D materials

Martin Rejhon et al.

Summary: The interfacial shear modulus plays a crucial role in controlling the sliding friction of supported two-dimensional materials. Experimental and simulation results demonstrate a reciprocal relationship between friction force per unit contact area and the interfacial shear modulus, which is determined by the stacking order and atomic layer-substrate interaction. Understanding and measuring the interfacial properties of atomic layers on substrates is of great significance for fundamental research and technological applications.

Structural Defects Modulate Electronic and Nanomechanical Properties of 2D Materials

Manoj Tripathi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of different geometries of line defects in graphene and molybdenum disulfide using atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopic mapping. The stiffness of graphene was found to be higher than molybdenum disulfide, with deflated graphene nanobubbles exhibiting the lowest stiffness. Density functional theory reveals alteration of bandstructures in graphene and MoS2 due to wrinkled structures, showing a higher modulation effect in MoS2.

Suspended MoTe2 field effect transistors with ionic liquid gate

W. R. Choi et al.

Summary: The electrical performance of suspended few-layer MoTe2 field-effect-transistors with ionic liquid gating has been greatly improved, leading to better subthreshold swing and on-off ratio at room temperature compared to substrate-supported devices. Suspended transistors with ionic liquid gating enable a larger charge density and may serve as a useful platform for studying screening physics in 2D materials.

Mechanical Properties of Atomically Thin Tungsten Dichalcogenides: WS2, WSe2, and WTe2

Alexey Falin et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mechanical properties of 2D tungsten disulfide, tungsten diselenide, and tungsten ditelluride, revealing that high-quality 1L WS2 has the highest Young's modulus and strength, with WS2 showing the most significant decrease in elasticity and strength with increased thickness among the three materials. The findings provide insights into the behavior of these materials under different conditions and aging effects, which can be beneficial for the design and application of 2D tungsten dichalcogenides in various fields.

Dewetting of a thin polymer film under shear

K. Kadri et al.

Summary: This paper provides new insights into the stability of thin polymer films under shear, demonstrating the impact of shear rate on the rupture behavior, with findings of delayed rupture at low shear rates, suppressed rupture at high shear rates, and a transient state where shear and van der Waals forces balance each other. Linear analysis suffices to describe rupture time in the absence of shear, while nonlinearities are crucial in the presence of shear.

Real-time tracking of ionic nano-domains under shear flow

Clodomiro Cafolla et al.

Summary: The study tracked the evolution of Rb+, K+, Na+, and Ca2+ nano-domains adsorbed on mica surfaces in aqueous solutions using high-speed atomic force microscopy, revealing that metal ions move relatively slowly when in groups, and the average velocity of clusters depends on the ions' charge density and hydration state. The lateral shear flow of the fluid indirectly influences the diffusion dynamics of ion clusters adsorbed onto an immersed solid.

Tuning-fork-based piezoresponse force microscopy

M. Labardi et al.

Summary: Surface displacements of picometers in piezoelectric materials after applying an electric potential can be detected and mapped with nanometer-scale lateral resolution using scanning probe methods, mainly piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). However, absolute determination of these displacements is hindered by mechanical and electrostatic side-effects, requiring complex experimental or post-processing procedures for reliable results. Using quartz tuning-fork force sensors in intermittent contact mode PFM can provide measurements of electrically-induced surface displacements unaffected by electrostatic side-effects typical in conventional cantilever-based PFM.
