Cytoprotection of Probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus with Artificial Nanoshells of Nature-Derived Eggshell Membrane Hydrolysates and Coffee Melanoidins in Single-Cell Nanoencapsulation

Sang Yeong Han et al.

Summary: A one-step fabrication method for thin films and shells is developed using nature-derived eggshell membrane hydrolysates (ESMHs) and coffee melanoidins (CMs), which are discarded as food waste. The nature-derived materials prove biocompatible with living cells, and the method allows for the construction of cell-in-shell nanobiohybrid structures. The shells, formed on individual Lactobacillus acidophilus, effectively protect the cells in simulated gastric fluid (SGF), with further enhanced protection through Fe3+-mediated shell augmentation.

An Outer Membrane-Inspired Polymer Coating Protects and Endows Escherichia coli with Novel Functionalities

Andrea Belluati et al.

Summary: A bio-inspired membrane made of Pluronic L-121 is created around Escherichia coli, providing protection and enabling the bacteria to resist harsh conditions. The polymer membrane also enhances the bacteria's ability to degrade toxic compounds and serves as a platform for surface modifications. The encapsulated bacteria exhibit improved sturdiness and gain new metabolic functionalities without genetic engineering.

Validation of housekeeping genes as internal controls for gene expression studies on biofilm formation in Bacillus velezensis

Lianmeng Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, suitable internal control genes for gene expression studies in Bacillus velezensis were selected and validated. It was found that the pyk gene showed the most stable expression during biofilm formation, and a combination of pyk, gyrA, and recA provided even better results. These validated genes and gene combinations can be used as internal controls for studying the mechanism of biofilm formation in B. velezensis or other Bacillus spp.

Summary: Probiotic strains are claimed to provide health benefits to the human body when consumed in adequate amounts. In order to function optimally, these bacteria should survive in high populations through the gastrointestinal tract, which can be achieved through techniques like microencapsulation and enrichment with prebiotic substances. Food products used as carriers for probiotic bacteria may have limitations related to cell viability, acidity of the matrices, processing, and storage conditions.
