Ferroelectricity induced by the absorption of water molecules on double helix SnIP

Dan Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, ferroelectricity in a one-dimensional system of double helix SnIP with absorbing water molecules was investigated. The orientation of polarized water molecules in the R2 region of SnIP and the displacement of I atom due to interaction with absorbed water molecules were identified as critical factors for electrical polarization. A plausible scenario for polarization flipping was proposed, involving the rolling-up of water molecules while maintaining their electrical dipole magnitude and changing their direction, along with the reverse displacement of I atoms. The introduction of strain was found to greatly enhance polarization, with up to 26.5% improvement under tensile strain and only 4% degradation under compressive strain. Additionally, strain was found to be correlated with the direct band gap.

Degenerate topological line surface phonons in quasi-1D double helix crystal SnIP

Bo Peng et al.

Summary: Degenerate points/lines in the band structures of crystals have become a staple feature of topological materials, with a relation between bulk topology and surface states. While line degeneracies of bulk excitations have been extensively studied, line degeneracies of surface states are still not well understood. This study shows that surface degeneracies can be protected by symmetries such as time-reversal symmetry and glide mirror symmetry, providing an ideal platform to explore such degeneracies.

Ultrafast Photoconductivity and Terahertz Vibrational Dynamics in Double-Helix SnIP Nanowires

David N. Purschke et al.

Summary: Time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy was used to study the transient photoconductivity of SnIP nanowire films and measure carrier mobility, revealing high electron mobility along the double-helix axis. Additionally, infrared-active THz vibrational modes were measured showing good agreement with first-principles calculations, and ultrafast photoexcitation-induced charge redistribution was observed on picosecond timescales. The findings suggest that SnIP could be well-suited for flexible electronics applications due to its high carrier mobility.

Chirality-Induced Propagation Velocity Asymmetry

Diego A. Hoff et al.

Summary: The study investigates the spin-dependent propagation of electrons in helical nanowires, revealing the interplay of spin angular momentum and nanowire chirality under spin-orbit interaction breaking the symmetry between left and right propagating electrons and giving rise to velocity asymmetry. It is based on a microscopic tight-binding model considering spin-orbit interaction, deriving the continuity equation for spin-dependent probability density including nonconserving terms and performing quantum dynamics calculations to study electron propagation dynamics. The results, applied to inorganic double-helix SnIP, a quasi-1D semiconductor, are generally valid due to symmetry considerations, aiming to examine the relation of propagation velocity asymmetry with chiral-induced spin selectivity effect.
