Combustion behavior of discrete magnesium diboride particles in the state of motion

Weidong Zhong et al.

Summary: In this study, the motion track, flame, and reaction process of MgB2 particles were investigated to understand their combustion mechanism. Three different combustion modes were identified: single-stage combustion, two-stage combustion, and micro-explosion combustion. The sustained combustion time of MgB2 particles was influenced by different gaseous mediums. The combustion residues were composed of MgB2, MgO, Mg, B2O3, and MgBx, and the burn-off rate of MgB2 particles could still be improved.

Magnesium-Enhanced Reactivity of Boron Particles: Role of Mg/B2O3 Exothermic Surface Reactions

Pankaj Ghildiyal et al.

Summary: In this paper, we investigated the effect of incorporating Mg nanoparticles as additive fuel in B/CuO nanoenergetic composites. The results showed that the reactivity of B/CuO nanoenergetic composites was enhanced by approximately 6 times, with a reduction in burn time of about 60%. The exothermic heterogeneous reactions between vapor-phase Mg and the molten B2O3 shell of boron at 500-650°C were found to induce surface modifications and enhance the reactivity of boron particles.

Ignition and combustion of Perfluoroalkyl-functionalized aluminum nanoparticles and nanothermite

Yue Jiang et al.

Summary: This work presents a facile method to functionalize the surface of nano-sized aluminum (nAl) particles with perfluoroalkylsilane. The thermochemical and combustion behaviors of perfluoroalkyl-functionalized nAl particles are investigated at different heating rates. The results show that the functionalization improves the thermal stability of nAl particles under slow heating conditions and enhances the ignition and combustion performance under fast heating conditions.

Boron-based composite energetic materials (B-CEMs): Preparation, combustion and applications

Wei-Qiang Pang et al.

Summary: Metal fuels with high energy densities are attractive for solid/hybrid rocket propulsion and energy-conversion applications. Boron powder is an ideal fuel candidate due to its high gravimetric and volumetric heats of combustion. However, amorphous boron has drawbacks of high ignition temperatures and incomplete combustion. Thus, there is growing interest in using boron-based composite energetic materials. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the preparation, combustion, and applications of boron-based composite energetic materials, and discusses the future challenges in the field.
