Self-Assembly of Colloidal Nanocrystals into 3D Binary Mesocrystals Published as part of the Accounts of Chemical Research special issue Self-Assembled Nanomaterials.

Bing Ni et al.

Summary: This article focuses on the growth of tridimensional binary mesocrystals and the self-assembly of two colloidal nanocrystal ensembles, aiming to provide a basis for more rational synthesis of mesocrystals in the future. The study found that the formation of mesocrystals requires nanocrystals with defined surface faceting and functionalized nanocrystals with high colloidal stability. Furthermore, the growth process of 3D binary mesocrystals requires delicate control over the size, shape, surface chemistry, and self-assembly process of the nanocrystals.

Binary icosahedral clusters of hard spheres in spherical confinement

Da Wang et al.

Summary: The influence of geometry on the local and global packing of particles is crucial, with binary mixtures of hard-sphere-like nanoparticles crystallizing into icosahedral clusters in bulk. The local structure of a significant portion of particles is similar to the MgCu(2)Laves phase, which has potential applications in photonics. The nucleation of icosahedral clusters is observed away from the spherical boundary, providing new insights into particle-level studies of binary crystallization.

Structural Diversity in Dimension-Controlled Assemblies of Tetrahedral Gold Nanocrystals

Yi Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the richness and complexity in dimension-controlled assemblies of gold nanotetrahedra, including the selective assembly of nearly a dozen two-dimensional and three-dimensional superstructures. Additionally, multiply twinned icosahedral supracrystals were achieved by drying aqueous gold nanotetrahedra on a hydrophobic substrate. This work expands the toolbox for designing superstructures using tetrahedral building blocks and could inspire future research on self-assembly and phase behavior of anisotropic colloidal particles.
