Multiple Impact-Resistant 2D Covalent Organic Framework

Weizhe Hao et al.

Summary: By molecular dynamics simulation, the ultralight monolayer covalent organic framework (COF), a novel 2D crystalline polymer, was found to possess superior impact resistant capability under high-velocity impact. The hexagonal nanopores integrated by polymer chains show large deformation compatibility and effectively restrain crack propagation, enabling COF to resist multiple impacts.

Scaling Law for Impact Resistance of Amorphous Alloys Connecting Atomistic Molecular Dynamics with Macroscale Experiments

Yujie Cheng et al.

Summary: In this paper, we establish the scaling law of impact resistance for amorphous alloys using laser-induced supersonic micro ballistic impact experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. The law connects the time and length scales of experimental results and simulations, providing a method for comparing the dynamic behavior of amorphous alloys at various scales and a guideline for designing new amorphous alloy materials with extraordinary impact resistance.

Low-Density Multilayer Graphdiyne Film with Excellent Energy Dissipation Capability under Micro-Ballistic Impact

Kailu Xiao et al.

Summary: The dynamical performance of multilayer graphdiyne (MLGDY) with ultra-low density and flexible features was investigated using laser-induced micro-projectile impact testing (LIPIT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results showed that MLGDY exhibited excellent dynamic energy dissipation ability due to the in-plane wave velocity resulting from the diacetylene linkages between benzene rings. Furthermore, the multiple crack tips and their propagation further enhanced the energy dissipation capability. The study also proposed feasible strategies to improve the impact resistance of MLGDY by combining it with high-strength multi-layer graphene and rotated graphdiyne (GDY) interlayer.

Peeling and sliding of graphene nanoribbons with periodic van der Waals interactions

Zhiming Xue et al.

Summary: The study investigates the peeling and sliding behaviors of graphene nanoribbons on a graphene substrate, revealing rich dynamics in adhesion, friction, and deformation patterns. Different types of strain solitons are identified during the stick-slip sliding process, depending on the ribbon structure. The study also highlights the influence of constrained displacements on the sliding force and the quasi-linear relationship between ribbon width and sliding friction.

Two-dimensional carbon nanotube woven highly-stretchable film with strain-induced tunable impacting performance

Yushun Zhao et al.

Summary: Mechanical and impacting properties of a carbon nanotube woven film (CNWF) based on single-walled carbon nanotube have been investigated using molecular dynamic simulations. The CNWF exhibits anisotropic behavior in the axial and transverse directions, with high tensile strength and Young's modulus in the axial direction and lower values in the transverse direction. However, the CNWF shows high stretchability and excellent impact resistance. It also has the ability to sustain the impact of multiple projectiles and selectively filter them by adjusting the tensile strain. These findings provide insights for the development of strong and multifunctional weaving structures based on carbon nanotubes.

Stress wave response in a two-dimensional membrane subjected to hypervelocity impact of a micro-flyer

Tao Liu et al.

Summary: This paper studies the stress wave propagation in 2D membrane subjected to hypervelocity impact (HVI). A triangular-pulse stress wave model is developed and verified, showing its accuracy and predictive capability. The influences of system parameters on the dynamic behaviors of the far-field stress wave are analyzed, and a waveform distortion phenomenon is observed leading to changes in the stress state.

In Situ Tensile Testing of Nanometer-Thick Two-Dimensional Transition-Metal Carbide Films: Implications for MXenes Acting as Nanoscale Reinforcement Agents

Yanxiao Li et al.

Summary: The in-plane mechanical behavior of stacks formed by titanium carbide MXenes was investigated in microscale uniaxial tensile experiments. The Young's modulus of MXene stacks remained almost constant, while the tensile strength decreased with an increase in the number of monolayers. The observed dependence of the tensile strength on the number of stacked MXene monolayers was attributed to defects in different layers within the multilayer MXenes.
