Lithium extraction from hard rock lithium ores (spodumene, lepidolite, zinnwaldite, petalite): Technology, resources, environment and cost

Tian-ming Gao et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the research progress of extracting lithium from different types of lithium ores, including spodumene, lepidolite, petalite, and zinnwaldite, using various methods such as acid, alkali, salt roasting, and chlorination. The study analyzes the resource intensity, environmental impact, and production cost of these extraction methods compared to extracting lithium from brine. It concludes that while the sulfuric acid method has a high lithium recovery rate, it is complex and energy-intensive, while alkali and chlorination methods offer lower energy consumption but require optimization of reaction conditions and equipment safety. The salt roasting method also consumes more resources and energy and requires adjustment to increase lithium yield and reduce production cost. The article emphasizes the need to develop appropriate technology for extracting lithium from ores, optimize processes, save resources and energy, reduce environmental impact, and improve the economic viability of the extraction process.

The role of solid solutions in iron phosphate-based electrodes for selective electrochemical lithium extraction

Gangbin Yan et al.

Summary: The authors investigate the co-intercalation of lithium and sodium ions in iron phosphate electrodes and demonstrate the control of lithium selectivity through intercalation kinetic manipulations. By increasing the energy barrier for sodium-ion intercalation using non-equilibrium solid-solution lithium seeding or remnant lithium, the lithium selectivity is enhanced.

A Strategy for Polysulfides/Polyselenides Protection Based on Co9S8@SiO2/C Host in Na-SeS2 Batteries

Yang Tingting et al.

Summary: The method of in situ growth of SiO2 protective layers on the surface of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) allows for obtaining unbroken sulfides with delicate morphology, which has been successfully applied to various MOFs. The room-temperature Na-SeS2 batteries assembled with Co9S8@SiO2/C prepared from ZIF-67 as the cathode host exhibit excellent rate performance and Coulombic efficiency.

Lithium extraction from water lithium resources through green electrochemical-battery approaches: A comprehensive review

Ye Zhang et al.

Summary: The growing market demand for lithium, especially for applications like lithium-ion batteries, highlights the importance of lithium production. Extraction of lithium from water resources, particularly those with high Mg/Li ratios, is becoming more popular due to its low cost and abundant reserves. Among various aqueous lithium-extraction methods, the electrochemical-battery approach is considered the most promising due to its excellent lithium selectivity, high insertion capacity, low energy consumption, high reversibility, and eco-friendliness. Future research should focus on enhancing battery-system stability, process optimization, and reducing operating costs.
