Hybrid vigor in Eucalyptus increases resistance against Phytophthora root rot

Tanay Bose et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the susceptibility of pure E. nitens and the hybrid E. grandis x E. nitens to Phytophthora alticola and P. cinnamomi. The results showed that the purebred E. nitens families were highly susceptible to both pathogens, while the E. grandis x E. nitens hybrid exhibited tolerance to them.

Multivariate Bayesian analysis to predict invasiveness of Phytophthora pathogens

Bruce G. Marcot et al.

Summary: We compiled a database of 32 traits on 204 species of Phytophthora and calculated the potential invasiveness of 103 better studied species. Using a Bayesian network model, we predicted the degree and probability of invasiveness of individual Phytophthora species. This modeling approach can be used for other pests and pathogens to advise land and resource managers in preventing potential invasions.

Citizen science can enhance strategies to detect and manage invasive forest pests and pathogens

Joseph M. M. Hulbert et al.

Summary: Incorporating citizen science into biological invasion management strategies can improve biosecurity. Citizen science projects play a significant role in early detection, monitoring, raising awareness, and informing decision-making for eradication and containment efforts. They also aid in finding resistant plant material for landscape restoration. However, it is unclear how these projects work together across all stages of the biological invasion process to enhance biosecurity. This paper provides examples of citizen science projects for each stage and proposes ways to integrate citizen science into biosecurity measures for safeguarding forest resources in the future.

A Critically Endangered Proteaceae in the Cape Florisitic Region threatened by an invasive pathogen

Trudy Paap et al.

Summary: The critically endangered Proteaceae species, Sorocephalus imbricatus, is experiencing rapid mortality due to the invasive pathogen P. cinnamomi. This discovery emphasizes the urgent need for greater recognition of the threat posed by P. cinnamomi to S. imbricatus and the broader floristic diversity of the Cape Floristic Region (CFR).

Global invasion history of the emerging plant pathogen Phytophthora multivora

Tetyana Tsykun et al.

Summary: The global trade of living plants and plant material has led to the spread of many plant pathogens, including the invasive pathogen Phytophthora multivora. Through genetic analysis, it has been discovered that P. multivora originated in South Africa and was then introduced to Australia, which acted as a bridgehead population for further spread to Europe and North America. This study highlights the complex invasion pattern of P. multivora.

Population Genetic Analyses of Phytophthora cinnamomi Reveals Three Lineages and Movement Between Natural Vegetation and Avocado Orchards in South Africa

Juanita Engelbrecht et al.

Summary: Phytophthora cinnamomi is a pathogen that causes root rot and dieback in thousands of plant species worldwide. This study investigated the genetic diversity and spread of P. cinnamomi in South Africa using microsatellite markers. The findings indicate low genetic diversity and shared genotypes between different areas. The study also suggests that P. cinnamomi was introduced to South Africa from the Western Cape region and that it primarily reproduces clonally. However, evidence of recombination was found in a recently established avocado orchard.

IDphy: An International Online Resource for Molecular and Morphological Identification of Phytophthora

Z. Gloria Abad et al.

Summary: IDphy is an online resource developed to facilitate the identification of Phytophthora species. It provides interactive and tabular keys, as well as standard operating procedures for morphological and molecular characterization. The resource also includes information on new species, specimen status, and genome assemblies. The effectiveness of IDphy and the information in this article could inspire the development of similar identification tools for other important plant pathogen groups.

Taro in West Africa: Status, Challenges, and Opportunities

Joy Jesumeda Oladimeji et al.

Summary: Taro is an ancient crop that plays a significant role in the socio-economic life of those living in the tropics and sub-tropics, particularly in West Africa. However, taro leaf blight has caused a decline in taro production in the region. The lack of research on taro in West Africa has hindered the utilization of innovative technologies to address the challenges faced by the crop. Plant breeding is the most sustainable approach for increasing taro productivity in the region.

PhytophthoraSpecies Associated with Roots of Native and Non-native Trees in Natural and Managed Forests

Tanay Bose et al.

Summary: Roots act as a biological filter allowing only a portion of soil-associated microbial diversity to infect plants, including both beneficial and detrimental organisms. The diversity and richness of Phytophthora species associated with roots were influenced by the soil origin and the root-soil interaction. Results showed a previously undetected diversity of Phytophthora species from South Africa, with significantly different species richness and composition between field root and soil samples.

Botanical gardens as key resources and hazards for biosecurity

Mesfin Wondafrash et al.

Summary: Botanical gardens play a crucial role in global biosecurity, serving as sentinel sites for early detection and eradication of invasive plant pests and pathogens. However, they also pose substantial risks as potential bridgeheads for pest and pathogen invasions, requiring strategic management interventions to mitigate these risks.

Phytophthora theobromicola sp. nov.: A New Species Causing Black Pod Disease on Cacao in Brazil

Jennifer Decloquement et al.

Summary: Black pod disease caused by Phytophthora species is a major concern for cacao production in Brazil, with high incidence levels reported. A study in Brazil identified a new species, Phytophthora theobromicola, associated with black pod disease on cacao, which showed distinct characteristics from other known Phytophthora species. Additionally, findings from pathogenicity tests showed significant variability in disease development among different Phytophthora species, highlighting the importance of disease control strategies and genetic resistance in cacao plants.

Two novel Phytophthora species from the southern tip of Africa

Summary: Through surveys carried out as part of the Cape Citizen Science programme and independent research, researchers discovered various Phytophthora species associated with natural vegetation in the Greater Cape Floristic Region of South Africa, including newly described Phytophthora emzansi and Phytophthora afrocarpa. The molecular and morphological data of these Phytophthora species enhance our understanding of the unique microbial diversity present in the native vegetation of southern Africa.

Global historic pandemics caused by the FAM-1 genotype of Phytophthora infestans on six continents

Amanda C. Saville et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the Phytophthora infestans FAM-1 genotype, which caused late blight in the late 19th century, was widespread on all six continents globally, being the main cause of the Irish famine. Compared to the US-1 genotype, FAM-1 was first detected in the majority of former British colonies. Historical sample data suggested that the FAM-1 genotype was diverse and widely spread worldwide.
