Morphology Engineering in Multicomponent Hollow Metal

Bo Shen et al.

Summary: In this study, hollow metal chalcogenide nanoparticles with large compositional and morphological diversity were synthesized by combining scanning probe block copolymer lithography with a Kirkendall effect-based sulfidation process. The influence of temperature-dependent diffusion kinetics, elemental composition and miscibility, and phase boundaries on the resulting particle morphologies was investigated.

From Heterostructures to Solid-Solutions: Structural Tunability in Mixed Halide Perovskites

Donghoon Shin et al.

Summary: The stability, reliability, and performance of halide-perovskite-based devices are determined by the structure, composition, and particle size of the device-enabling materials. A new method called evaporation-crystallization polymer pen lithography is used to synthesize and study Cs(0.5)FA(0.5)PbX(3) crystals and discover heterostructure morphology. The heterostructures are formed due to differences in solubility of ions and enthalpic preference for ion segregation, and solid-solution nanocrystals are synthesized to suppress photoinduced anion migration for photostable optoelectronic materials.

Molecular Thin Films Enable the Synthesis and Screening of Nanoparticle Megalibraries Containing Millions of Catalysts

Peter T. Smith et al.

Summary: Megalibraries are centimeter-scale chips containing millions of materials synthesized in parallel using scanning probe lithography. They can accelerate the discovery of materials for various applications. A challenge is the availability of compatible substrates for megalibrary synthesis. Polystyrene films were developed as universal substrate coatings to overcome this challenge. Different materials were synthesized in megalibraries and their photocatalytic activity was evaluated.

Heterogeneous Trimetallic Nanoparticles as Catalysts

James W. M. Crawley et al.

Summary: The development and application of trimetallic nanoparticles are rapidly accelerating in the field of catalysis, presenting exciting opportunities. Current methods for design, synthesis, analysis, and application of trimetallic nanoparticles have been explored, but challenges in controlling elemental segregation and identifying influential characteristics remain. The multielement composition of trimetallic nanoparticles exhibits beneficial synergy in oxidation, dehydrogenation, and hydrogenation reactions, but further work is needed to maximize productivity. Computational support is crucial for experimental endeavors, and the marriage of simulation and experiment is necessary to advance this field. Clear challenges remain in identifying, making, and applying trimetallic catalysts efficiently, but the outlook is strong.

Combinatorial Synthesis and Screening of Mixed Halide Perovskite Megalibraries

Minliang Lai et al.

Summary: The discovery of new mixed halide perovskite compositions and structures is hindered by the time-consuming and low-throughput nature of current synthesis and screening methods. This study presents a high-throughput strategy that combines evaporation-crystallization polymer pen lithography and defect-engineered anion exchange to synthesize combinatorial libraries of MHPs with controlled halide mixing ratio and particle size, enabling the rapid discovery of exceptional MHP optoelectronic materials.

A high throughput optical method for studying compositional effects in electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction

Jeremy L. Hitt et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the discovery of efficient catalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction, with Au6Ag2Cu2 and Au4Zn3Cu3 identified as the most active compositions among four elements. These ternary electrocatalysts showed significantly higher activity than binary combinations, leading to a 5-fold increase in current density. Additionally, the high Faradaic efficiency for CO2 reduction to CO was observed, despite the ternary catalysts being less effective for hydrogen evolution reaction compared to pure Au.
