Photometric mass estimation and the stellar mass-halo mass relation for low mass galaxies

Dennis Zaritsky et al.

Summary: We propose a technique for estimating the mass of dark matter halos in local galaxies based on photometric measurements, allowing us to establish the relationship between stellar mass and halo mass down to stellar masses of 10^(5) M. We find no significant differences among the relationships in four local galaxy clusters or between the clusters and field galaxies, and our results agree with previous studies using abundance matching methods. By fitting a power law to our empirical relationship, we determine that for stellar masses less than 10^(9) M, the halo mass is M_h = 10^(10.35 +/- 0.02)(M_* / 10^(8) M)(0.63 +/- 0.02). However, this relationship is susceptible to systematic modeling errors and the uncertainties quoted refer to the uncertainties in the median relationship. The scatter about the fit in halo mass, including uncertainties from our methodology, is 0.3 dex for galaxies that meet our selection criteria and have stellar masses less than 10^(9) M. Additionally, we apply the same technique to lower luminosity galaxies in the Local Group and find evidence for additional mass beyond the effective radius that is not accounted for by the standard dark matter profile. If this mass is in the form of a central black hole, their masses are in the range of intermediate mass black holes, around 10^((5.7 +/- 0.6)) M, corresponding to a few percent of the halo mass and higher than extrapolated values for more massive galaxies.

The specific angular momentum of disc galaxies and its connection with galaxy morphology, bar structure, and disc gravitational instability

Alessandro B. Romeo et al.

Summary: Using a large sample of disc galaxies, we conducted a comparative analysis of specific angular momentum (j) of stars, gas, baryons, and dark matter haloes to understand galaxy formation and evolution. Our analysis provides tight constraints on the retained fractions of specific angular momentum and their trends with mass fraction and galaxy morphology, revealing how well specific angular momentum is conserved in the process. We found that galaxies with higher baryon fractions retain larger fractions of their specific angular momentum.

Observed structural parameters of EAGLE galaxies: reconciling the mass-size relation in simulations with local observations

Anna de Graaff et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the differences between the sizes and morphologies inferred from the stellar mass distributions and the optical light distributions of galaxies. Our results show that the sizes derived from the optical light distributions are systematically larger than those derived from the stellar mass distributions. However, using the r-band sizes significantly improves the agreement between the simulated and observed stellar mass-size relation. Furthermore, we find that the morphologies of the simulated galaxies are closer to exponential discs rather than bulge-like structures.

The galaxy-halo size relation of low-mass galaxies in FIRE

Eric Rohr et al.

Summary: Research has found a nearly linear relationship between the sizes of low-mass galaxies and the sizes of their parent dark matter haloes, with relatively small scatter. This suggests that galaxy sizes can be used as an independent method to infer halo masses, separate from stellar masses.

Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA): Data Release 4 and the z < 0.1 total and z < 0.08 morphological galaxy stellar mass functions

Simon P. Driver et al.

Summary: In the Galaxy And Mass Assembly Data Release 4 (GAMA DR4), a full spectroscopic redshift sample is provided, which includes 248,682 galaxy spectra and a total of 330,542 redshifts. This data set has the highest redshift density and high completeness, making it suitable for studying galaxy mergers, galaxy groups, and low redshift galaxy population. The release also includes additional measured and derived data products. The analysis of the data reveals the total galaxy stellar mass function and its subdivision by morphological class.

Galactic angular momentum in the IllustrisTNG simulation - I. Connection to morphology, halo spin, and black hole mass

Vicente Rodriguez-Gomez et al.

Summary: This article uses the TNG100 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project to investigate the stellar specific angular momenta (j(*)) of approximately 12,000 central galaxies at z = 0 in a cosmological context. The results show that the j(*)-M-* relations for early-type and late-type galaxies in IllustrisTNG are in good agreement with observations, and that the specific angular momenta retained by these galaxy types are approximately 10-20% and 50-60% of their host haloes, respectively, with some dependence on the methodology used to measure galaxy morphology. The article also explores the scatter in the j(*)-M-* relation with respect to the spin of the dark matter halo and the mass of the supermassive black hole (BH) at the galactic centre. The findings indicate that galaxies in faster spinning haloes and those hosting less massive BHs tend to have higher specific angular momentum. The article further reveals that, at fixed galaxy or halo mass, halo spin and BH mass are anticorrelated, possibly due to more efficient gas flow towards the galactic centre in slowly rotating systems. Finally, the article demonstrates the importance of halo spin in determining galaxy sizes, with larger discs forming at the centres of faster rotating haloes, though this trend breaks down for massive galaxies with stellar masses dominated by accreted stars at approximately 10^11 M-circle dot.

Summary: By using the GRUMPY model to forward model dwarf galaxy formation and evolution, we found that the luminosity and distance distributions of model satellites are consistent with those measured in surveys. Additionally, the model can simultaneously reproduce the observed distribution of stellar half-mass radii of MW satellites and the overall r(1/2)-M-* relation observed in dwarf galaxies.

Youcai Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between the observed radii of central galaxies and the virial radii of their host dark matter haloes, as well as the dependence on the halo spin and concentration. The results suggest that early- and late-type galaxies have similar galaxy-halo size relations, with a decreasing ratio at higher halo masses.

Stellar and weak lensing profiles of massive galaxies in the Hyper-Suprime Cam survey and in hydrodynamic simulations

Felipe Ardila et al.

Summary: A consistent comparison of mass and mass profiles of massive central galaxies at z ~0.4 from HSC observations and simulations was conducted, revealing discrepancies between Illustris and TNG100, especially in the inner regions. This study indicates that TNG100 may not be efficient enough in quenching star formation at certain halo mass scales, while Ponos simulations show excess mass due to overcooling and excess star formation in central regions.

The Stellar Mass in and around Isolated Central Galaxies: Connections to the Total Mass Distribution through Galaxy-Galaxy Lensing in the Hyper Suprime-Cam Survey

Wenting Wang et al.

Summary: Using photometrically selected galaxies from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey, the study measured the stellar-mass density profiles for satellite galaxies around isolated central galaxies (ICGs) and their stellar halos. It was found that the total mass distributions are dominated by ICGs within about 0.15 times the halo virial radius. The study also showed that the integrated stellar mass in satellites is proportional to the virial mass of the host halo for ICGs more massive than 10^(10.5) M (circle dot), and that red ICGs tend to be hosted by more massive dark matter halos and have more satellites.

The galaxy size-halo mass scaling relations and clustering properties of central and satellite galaxies

Facundo Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The study finds that the stellar mass-size relations of central and satellite galaxies are similar, but their halo mass-size relations differ significantly. Larger halo masses tend to host larger central galaxies, while the size of satellite galaxies is only slightly dependent on halo virial mass. The results are consistent with a model where the size of galaxies scales with the cubic root of their host halo mass, with satellites being slightly smaller than central galaxies, likely due to tidal stripping.
