The Cosmic Hunt for members in the outskirts of ultra-faint dwarf galaxies: Ursa Major I, Coma Berenices, and Bootes I

Fletcher Waller et al.

Summary: Utilizing Gaia EDR3 data, this study identified potential members in the outskirts of three ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (Coma Berenices, Ursa Major I, and Bootes I), as well as a new member in the central region of Ursa Major I. The Gemini GRACES spectrograph was used to observe these targets and determine their precision radial velocities, metallicities, and absorption lines for 10 elements. The results confirm the associations between the identified stars and their respective UFD galaxies, providing insights into their formation and evolution processes.

A 3D view of dwarf galaxies with Gaia and VLT/FLAMES I. The Sculptor dwarf spheroidal

Eline Tolstoy et al.

Summary: We present a new survey of radial velocities and metallicities for red giant stars in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy, which includes the largest and most complete sample in any dwarf galaxy. Our analysis reveals a metallicity gradient and a distinct kinematic property for the most metal-poor population in Sculptor. In addition, combining our results with Gaia DR3 photometry provides a more detailed understanding of the resolved stellar population in Sculptor. This survey highlights the importance of stellar spectroscopy in modeling galaxy formation and evolution on small scales.

Impact of systematic nuclear uncertainties on composition and decay heat of dynamical and disc ejecta in compact binary mergers

I Kullmann et al.

Summary: Theoretically predicted yields of elements created by the r-process have large uncertainties due to incomplete nuclear knowledge and approximative hydrodynamical modeling. This study examines the impact of nuclear uncertainties on r-process abundance distribution and heating rates using different nuclear input models. The results show modest effects on abundance distribution and early heating rates, but more significant effects on late-time heating rates, especially related to fission. The study also emphasizes the importance of considering multiple trajectories and the adopted conditions for accurate quantification of nuclear uncertainties. In addition, the nuclear uncertainties have an impact on the estimated age of metal-poor stars.

Detailed Chemical Abundances of Stars in the Outskirts of the Tucana II Ultrafaint Dwarf Galaxy

Anirudh Chiti et al.

Summary: Using high-resolution Magellan/MIKE spectroscopy, we provide chemical abundances and velocities of five stars located between 0.3 and 1.1 kpc from the center of the Tucana II ultrafaint dwarf galaxy. The stars exhibit low metal and neutron-capture element abundances, confirming their association with Tucana II. The chemical abundances suggest the dominance of faint core-collapse supernovae in the early evolution of Tucana II, with a decline in [alpha/Fe] indicating the onset of Type Ia supernova enrichment. The lack of a radial velocity gradient implies a lack of tidal disruption, providing insights into the formation scenarios of the extended component of Tucana II.

Non-thermal nucleosynthesis by accelerated particles to account for the surface composition of P-rich stars

S. Goriely

Summary: This paper investigates the origin of chemical pollution on the surface of 15 abnormally phosphorus-rich stars. It suggests that an irradiation process resulting from the interaction of high-energy protons and/or alpha-particles with target material may be responsible for the observed chemical pollution. The study finds that this irradiation process can produce significant amounts of phosphorus and other heavy elements, similar to what the traditional slow neutron-capture process produces, except for a few species that do not match with the overall surface composition of phosphorus-rich stars.

Summary: This study presents accurate atmospheric parameters and NLTE abundances for very metal-poor stars in the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The stars exhibit alpha-enhancements and a tight relationship between Ba and Mg, suggesting a common origin in massive stars. Additionally, the study reveals a decline in alpha/Fe for stars with higher [Fe/H] values and a distinctive Ba enrichment pattern in one C-enhanced star.

The p-process in exploding rotating massive stars

A. Choplin et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mechanism of p-process nucleosynthesis in rotating massive stars and finds that rotation has a comparable impact on the p-process as on the s-process. The contribution of core-collapse supernovae from massive stars to the solar p-nuclei may have been underestimated in the past.

Evidence from Disrupted Halo Dwarfs that r-process Enrichment via Neutron Star Mergers is Delayed by ≳500 Myr

Rohan P. Naidu et al.

Summary: The astrophysical origins of r-process elements are still unknown. Neutron star mergers and certain types of core-collapse supernovae are leading candidates. The study found that the disrupted dwarfs Kraken and GSE, with similar masses but different star formation durations, provide an opportunity to investigate r-process enrichment. The results suggest that both neutron star mergers and core-collapse supernovae contribute to the enrichment of r-process elements.

The impact of natal kicks on galactic r-process enrichment by neutron star mergers

Freeke van de Voort et al.

Summary: We study galactic enrichment with r-process elements and find that neutron star mergers and core-collapse supernovae are the main sources. Neutron star natal kicks affect the location and travel distance of neutron star mergers, impacting the r-process abundance. Lower kick velocities reduce the scatter in r-process abundances.

The Cosmic History of Long Gamma-Ray Bursts

Giancarlo Ghirlanda et al.

Summary: This study explores the cosmic formation rate and luminosity function evolution of long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) using observational data. The research reveals that the formation rate of LGRBs increases with redshift, peaking at around z=3, and then decreases. Additionally, the study finds that the characteristic luminosity function break of LGRBs evolves moderately with redshift. The overall findings are consistent with theoretical models and host galaxy observations.

Summary: Gaia EDR3 data were used to identify potential members in the outskirts of three ultra-faint dwarf galaxies. Spectroscopic observations and chemical abundance analysis confirmed the associations between these members and the dwarf galaxies. The results also suggest that the outermost stars in these galaxies have similar chemical patterns as the central stars, possibly indicating a movement from the central regions through tidal stripping and/or supernova feedback.

Star Formation Histories of Ultra-faint Dwarf Galaxies: Environmental Differences between Magellanic and Non-Magellanic Satellites?*

Summary: The study shows that these seven ultra-faint dwarf galaxies created at least 80% of their stellar mass by z similar to 6, with quenching times older than 11.5 Gyr ago, consistent with reionization suppressing star formation of small dark matter halos. Magellanic Cloud satellites exhibit quenching times about 600 Myr more recent on average compared to other Milky Way satellites, but still compatible within the errors.

Summary: The study indicates that a combination of near-Chandrasekar and sub-Chandrasekar yields is necessary to fit the chemical evolution of different Fe-peak elements. John J. Cowan et al.

Summary: The rapid neutron-capture process (r-process) is responsible for about half of the heavy elements found in nature, but uncertainties and open questions remain. Neutron star mergers as the astrophysical site of the r-process in the Milky Way and its satellite galaxies

Shinya Wanajo et al.

Summary: This study explores the possibility of neutron star mergers being the site of r-process in the Milky Way, addressing inconsistencies in observed stellar abundance data through detailed galactic chemical evolution modeling. The results suggest that neutron star mergers may indeed be the unique r-process site in the Milky Way, provided specific delay-time distribution conditions are met. The study also implies that the natal kicks of binary neutron stars have minimal impact on the evolution of elements like Europium in the galactic disc.
