The PHANGS-MUSE nebular catalogue

B. Groves et al.

Summary: Ionized nebulae provide critical insights into the conditions of the interstellar medium (ISM). The PHANGS-MUSE survey has produced optical spectroscopic coverage of the central star-forming discs of nearby galaxies, identifying thousands of nebulae per galaxy. Using diagnostic line ratios, the physical properties and environmental characteristics of each nebula are determined, providing a rich database for ISM studies.

PHANGS-JWST First Results: Duration of the Early Phase of Massive Star Formation in NGC 628

Jaeyeon Kim et al.

Summary: By using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and its high-resolution infrared observations, we have demonstrated the importance of studying the matter cycle during the earliest stages of star formation. Our measurements in the galaxy NGC 628 at a distance of 9.8 Mpc show that young massive stars remain embedded for approximately 5.1 Myr, with 2.3 Myr being heavily obscured, consistent with previous measurements in nearby galaxies.

Stellar associations powering H ii regions - I. Defining an evolutionary sequence

Fabian Scheuermann et al.

Summary: Connecting the gas in H II regions to the underlying ionizing radiation source helps us understand stellar feedback and the evolution of H II regions. Using PHANGS-MUSE, we detect and measure physical properties of nearly 24,000 H II regions across 19 galaxies. By analyzing associations with ionizing sources, we find correlations between association ages and various properties, suggesting an evolutionary sequence. We also observe correlations with local metallicity variations, indicating preferential star formation in metal-rich areas.

Multiscale stellar associations across the star formation hierarchy in PHANGS-HST nearby galaxies: methodology and properties

Kirsten L. Larson et al.

Summary: We developed a method to identify stellar associations using HST NUV-U-B-V-I imaging and applied it to two galaxies in the PHANGS-HST survey. Our algorithm successfully characterizes the properties of the associations and provides a more complete census of recent star formation activity. Younger associations correlate closely with H ii regions, while older associations show an anti-correlation with H α emission.

The PHANGS-MUSE survey Probing the chemo-dynamical evolution of disc galaxies

Eric Emsellem et al.

Summary: The PHANGS-MUSE survey maps 19 massive nearby star-forming disc galaxies using the MUSE integral field spectrograph. It provides the first integral field spectrograph view of star formation across different local environments and offers a unique perspective on associated gas and stellar kinematics, as well as constraints on star-formation history.

PHANGS-MUSE: The H II region luminosity function of local star-forming galaxies

Francesco Santoro et al.

Summary: We used the PHANGS-MUSE sample to study the Hα luminosity function of extragalactic H II regions. Our observations show that the LF slope decreases with the galaxy's star formation rate surface density. We also found that the LF is shallower in the spiral arm areas compared to the inter-arm areas in galaxies with clear spiral arms.

PHANGS-HST: new methods for star cluster identification in nearby galaxies

David A. Thilker et al.

Summary: The study introduces an innovative approach for detecting and classifying stellar clusters in the PHANGS-HST program, utilizing the Multiple Concentration Index (MCI) parameter to distinguish cluster candidates from stars and incorporating Machine Learning for improved selection accuracy. Performance comparisons with LEGUS show high agreement in cluster identification, with subtle differences attributed to specific project choices. The ML-classified catalogues in PHANGS-HST reach fainter magnitudes and lower stellar masses, suggesting improved efficiency compared to human classification.

On the duration of the embedded phase of star formation

Jaeyeon Kim et al.

Summary: Feedback from massive stars is crucial in molecular cloud evolution. The embedded phase of massive star formation lasts 2-7 million years, with the region heavily obscured in the first half and partially exposed in the second half. After the cloud disperses, ongoing star formation is no longer traced by 24 emission, but can be detected through ambient CO-dark gas emissions for 2-9 million years. Future JWST observations will enable routine measurements across nearby galaxies.

STEP survey - II. Structural analysis of 170 star clusters in the SMC

M. Gatto et al.

Summary: This study derived surface brightness profiles and structural parameters for 170 star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud, providing ages for a subsample of 134 clusters. The results indicate a dynamic evolution of the SMC star cluster system in terms of sizes, luminosities, and masses, with a relationship between cluster mass and inner expansion detected. The data suggest an increase in core radius after a certain period and a mass-size relationship across the investigated range of cluster masses.

PHANGS-HST: star cluster spectral energy distribution fitting with CIGALE

Jordan A. Turner et al.

Summary: The sensitivity and angular resolution of photometric surveys conducted by the Hubble Space Telescope allow for the study of individual star clusters in galaxies up to a few tens of megaparsecs away. By fitting the spectral energy distributions of star clusters using the cigale package, researchers can derive ages, stellar masses, and reddenings. Analysis of star clusters in NGC 3351 revealed that clusters in the inner star-forming ring are young and massive, while clusters in the stellar bulge are older.
