Numerical dissipation strongly affects the equatorial jet speed in simulations of hot Jupiter atmospheres

Mark Hammond et al.

Summary: This study shows that hyperdiffusion can affect the large-scale circulation of simulations of hot Jupiters, slowing down and spreading out the atmospheric jet. It provides a basis for investigating the real momentum budget and jet speed of hot Jupiters, and highlights the need to examine long-held assumptions in modeling novel exoplanets.

A New Analysis of Eight Spitzer Phase Curves and Hot Jupiter Population Trends: Qatar-1b, Qatar-2b, WASP-52b, WASP-34b, and WASP-140b

E. M. May et al.

Summary: In this study, a comparative analysis of phase curves was conducted for four planets with a similar equilibrium temperature of about 1300K. The results showed a linear trend of increasing hotspot offset with increasing orbital period and provided evidence for two classes of planets in apparent redistribution versus equilibrium temperature parameter space. Additionally, tentative evidence for a dependence of hotspot offset on planetary surface gravity was also found in the sample.

Exploring the deep atmospheres of HD 209458b and WASP-43b using a non-gray general circulation model

Aaron David Schneider et al.

Summary: Simulations with a 3D general circulation model suggest that the observed radius inflation in hot Jupiters may be driven by the downward advection of energy from the photosphere into deeper layers. The study compares the dynamical heat transport in a non-inflated hot Jupiter and a canonical inflated hot Jupiter, and finds differences in the deep temperature profile and flow structures between the two planets.

Polar and mid-latitude vortices and zonal flows on Jupiter and Saturn

Moritz H. Heimpel et al.

Summary: Zonal flows consisting of equatorial super-rotation and alternating East-West jet streams exist on Jupiter and Saturn, and interacting with these flows leads to the occurrence of various vortices. High-resolution simulations show that deep convective turbulence can explain the structure of jets, but the latitude and the strength and depth of stable stratification can modify jet morphologies and affect the formation and dynamics of vortices. The observations of cloud-level flow from Juno and Cassini can be explained in terms of deep convective dynamics in the molecular envelopes of Jupiter and Saturn.

Thaddeus D. Komacek et al.

Summary: Hot and ultra-hot Jupiters with inflated radii retain significant entropy from formation, contributing to enhanced internal heat flux impacting atmospheric circulation and thermal structure. Simulations show significant local differences in temperature and wind speeds across observable atmospheres, dependent on surface gravity.

Summary: To accurately identify the atmospheric characteristics of exoplanets and make the best use of observational data, a comprehensive understanding of their atmospheres is necessary. By using four widely used exoplanetary GCMs, this study examines the climate of TRAPPIST-1e under different atmospheric compositions and highlights the importance of not relying solely on one model to understand exoplanet climates.

Bistability of the Atmospheric Circulation on TRAPPIST-1e

Denis E. Sergeev et al.

Summary: Using a 3D general circulation model, researchers have found that the exoplanet TRAPPIST-1e exhibits a climate bistability, with two distinct atmospheric circulation regimes. The emergence of these regimes depends on various factors, such as initial and surface boundary conditions, as well as physical parameterizations. The balance between zonally asymmetric heating, mean overturning circulation, and mid-latitude baroclinic instability plays a crucial role in determining the circulation regime.

Summary: The ongoing NASA's Juno mission has placed new constraints on the internal dynamics of Jupiter, revealing a complex internal structure with a dipole-dominated surface magnetic field and a stratification of metallic and molecular hydrogen. The simulations show that in Jupiter's metallic core, magnetic energy is nearly an order of magnitude larger than kinetic energy, while kinetic energy is mainly pumped into zonal flows in the molecular envelope.

The rotational and divergent components of atmospheric circulation on tidally locked planets

Summary: This study uses the Helmholtz decomposition technique to separate planetary atmospheric circulation into rotational and divergent components, revealing the significant role of divergent velocities in day-night heat transport, contributing around half of the heat transport for hot Jupiter. Further investigation is needed to understand the relative contributions of rotational and divergent components to day-night heat transport.

The cloudy shape of hot Jupiter thermal phase curves

Summary: The atmospheric circulation of hot Jupiters becomes less efficient at higher temperatures, especially when nightside clouds are present, leading to extremely inefficient day-to-night heat transport.
